Presentation: Those Dangerous Glamour Years of Aviation

Senior Moments, a monthly coffee and conversation program designed specifically for seniors, will meet in the Library’s Conference Room at 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 19 for a lecture on “Behind the Smile: the Glamour Years of Aviation.” What would you do if your plane’s emergency exit erupted? Or if missiles exploded as your jet landed in a war zone? The late 1960s and early 1970s years, during the dawn of the jet age, were a time when danger and glamour existed side by side.

Friday Night Feature: ‘Concussion’ Starring Will Smith

The movie Concussion (2015) is Darien Library’s Friday Night Feature for Friday, June 3. It will play at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the library. The film stars Will Smith and also features Stephen Moyer, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alec Baldwin, Eddie Marsan, Luke Wilson; Rated PG-13; 123 minutes; Presented with Captions for the hearing impaired. Filmmaker Peter Landesman (Parkland) wrote and directed this sports-themed drama based on Jeanne Marie Laskas’ GQ article “Game Brain,” about the potentially horrific cost of playing football. Pittsburgh-based neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu (Will Smith) discovers a degenerative brain disease now known as CTE in the autopsies of several deceased pro-football players, but after presenting his research, he finds himself under fire from the NFL.

Learn more about the Zika Virus from the town health director and a doctor who is medical advisor for the Darien Health Department at a Darien Library forum, 7 p.m., Thursday, March 31. Here’s an announcement from the Darien Health Department about the forum:

Reports of travel-associated Zika virus disease cases continue to increase across mainland US. As of March 8, 2016, there have been 157 cases reported in Puerto Rico, with 9 hospitalizations. Most days, you can’t turn on the news without hearing about this mosquito-borne disease. In an effort to answer questions and provide up to the minute information to the public, the Darien Library will sponsor a “Zika Virus Public Forum” beginning at 7:00 on March 31st featuring presentations by David Knauf, Darien Director of Health, and Caleb Moore, MD, the Health Department’s Medical Advisor.
