Darien police said a 36-year-old woman was charged with driving while under the influence after a driver on the Merritt Parkway followed her off an exit into Darien and then called police. Police described what happened with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

At about 8 p.m., police were sent to the intersection of Mansfield Avenue and Stephen Mather Road on the report of a motor vehicle being driven in an erratic way. While officers were driving to the scene, they were told the complainant, a Stamford resident, somehow had got the driver of the erratic vehicle to stop on Stephen Mather Road. On approaching the car — a black 2014 Nissan Altima — police saw damage around the front bumper and headlights. The driver, a  Norwalk resident, told police she had hit a deer somewhere, but couldn’t say where or when.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, the woman was driving a 2005 Mercury Sable east on Middlesex Road near its intersection with Laurel Lane when she went into the opposite traffic lane just as a 20-year-old Darien man, driving west, was headed toward her. The Darien man, in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, swerved into the opposite lane to avoid the oncoming car, but his vehicle was hit. It was damaged heavily on its right (passenger) side and in the rear.

Tip: When driving toward a police patrol car at 3:30 a.m., do not suddenly turn off your headlights. It will not make you less conspicuous. That, according to a Darien police report, is what a 17-year-old Darien boy did last Thursday while driving north on Long Neck Point Road (to be fair, we don’t actually know why he turned off the headlights). The result was that the police officer turned around, followed the 2007 Jeep Wrangler and saw it cross over the yellow line on the roadway. The officer pulled over the vehicle.

The woman, a Norwalk resident, later told police she was driving home from a party in Milford. State police later told Darien police that they had received complaints about the woman’s erratic driving on Interstate 95. She had passed Norwalk on the highway and got off at Exit 11, then started driving east on the Post Road, through the center of town. A police officer on regular patrol was driving behind her vehicle, a 2000 Lexus RX station wagon SUV and noticed that her left-turn signal was on, although she was driving straight through town.

At 1:56 a.m. on Sunday, July 3, an officer saw two vehicles going the wrong way on Center Street, where it’s a one-way road just behind the restaurants and bars along Tokeneke Road. The officer followed the vehicles as they turned onto Old Kings Highway South, then Tokeneke Road, the Post Road and then north on Mansfield Avenue. The officer saw one of the vehicles, a white BMW X4 cross the “fog line” on the right side of the road, then drift across the double yellow line in the middle of the road, until it was straddling he roadway in the area of Buttonwood Lane. The officer signaled for the car to pull over, which it did after about 20 seconds.
