Abilis’ Special Needs Clients Are Exercising in an Online Fitness Program That Schools Might Use

Abilis, which provides services to individuals with special needs and their families, is working with an online wellness company to study the fitness levels of 100 Abilis community members. — an announcement from Abilis

The study involves 100 Abilis community members, all with varying abilities, who have free access to programs provided by the online company, HomeField. By tracking metrics and capturing feedback during the study, Abilis and HomeField intend to demonstrate the effectiveness of HomeField programs and implement them throughout Connecticut. Participants will be monitored and measured to gauge improvements in range of motion, levels of independence, overall mood, self-stimulatory behaviors, time-on-task, levels of individual and caregiver confidence, weight loss and BMI calculations. “Abilis community members have been participating in HomeField’s programs for a while now, both in live classes and every day online,” said Amy Montimurro, CEO and president of Abilis.

Abilis to Host Information Night for Young Adults With Disabilities to Learn About Employment Internship Program

Abilis, the nonprofit organization providing services and support to more than 800 individuals with special needs and their families, is hosting a Project SEARCH Information Night for young adults with disabilities to learn about its employment internship program. — an announcement from Abilis

Abilis currently operates two Project SEARCH programs in  partnership with Greenwich Hospital and the Darien YMCA. This free event will be held at Greenwich Hospital in the Nobel conference room, 5 Perryridge Road in Greenwich, Connecticut, on Thursday, March 30, at 6 p.m.

Space is limited and registration is requested at abilis.us/calendar. Project SEARCH is a national program often run at hospitals throughout the United States and is a nine-month internship and job training program for young adults with developmental disabilities ages 18-30. Abilis has been running Project SEARCH in partnership with Greenwich Hospital for the past four years, and in 2022, expanded the program to include the Darien YMCA.

Abilis and Darien YMCA are excited to announce the opening of The NEW Café at Darien YMCA! The Café at Darien YMCA is a unique partnership between Darien YMCA and Abilis and provides competitive employment opportunities for adults with disabilities. — an announcement from Abilis and the Darien YMCA

The Café will provide coffee, tea, breakfast, lunch and snacks Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expanded hours during the week to stay open until 6 p.m. and Saturday’s hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be put in place in February after The Café completes its employee training. “We are really excited to partner with the Darien YMCA to run their Café inside the Y and service the Y’s members,” said Amy Montimurro, CEO and president of Abilis. “They have been incredible partners over the past year, embracing our Project Search program.”
