Twenty-three seniors, ages 70-90, gathered at the Waters Edge at Giovanni’s in Darien last Friday, March 11 to participate in our area’s first speed dating event designed specifically for this age group.
Participants came from towns throughout the area, including Stamford, Norwalk, Old Greenwich, and even from out of state, such as Rye Brook, N.Y.

The event was hosted by Tony Savino of 1490-WGCH, and presented by SilverSource, Inc. and the Stamford Senior Center.
“I like them all, but I think I made a connection,” said 83-year-old Pasquale Apruzzese of Norwalk. Janet Gold, of Old Greenwich, who spent over forty years as a flight attendant, came with a friend. “This is very interesting,” she said. “I love people, and I love to talk so I think this is great.”
Participants were placed into pairs, seated together for a five minute ‘date.’ When time was up, a bell would ring, and Tony Savino could be heard saying, “Time’s up, make sure you mark your scorecards before moving onto your next date.”
At the end of the event scorecards were collected and results tallied to determine how many matches were made for the day. When two participants each marked “yes,” they would be provided with each other’s contact information so they may continue their conversation.
The room was elegant, overlooking the Noroton River, with round tables set for two and a vase of spring flowers. “This is an exciting, life affirming occasion,” said SilverSource Executive Director Kathleen Bordelon.
The event complimented a screening of the documentary, The Age of Love, which was held at the Stamford Senior Center last month.
“We had a packed house for the film, which documents a senior speed dating event held in Rochester, NY,” said Christina Crain, Executive Director of the Stamford Senior Center.
“The full audience confirmed that there truly was interest in speed dating, and since then I’ve had numerous requests for an event targeted to the 50- to 70-year-old set. It goes to show, it doesn’t matter how old you are, we all have a lot of living to do.”
