On different nights last week, one or more people were opening doors of unlocked cars — and in one case, a car was stolen, police said.
On Sunnyside Avenue
On Sunnyside Avenue, a 2021 Honda was stolen sometime overnight from Saturday to Sunday, Jan. 13 to 14. The owner told police the car had been left unlocked with the keys inside.
That same night at a home across the street, an unlocked vehicle was entered, but nothing was missing, the owner told police. Police didn’t say how the owner knew entry was made.
On Fairfield Avenue
Elsewhere in town, three people living on Fairfield Avenue told police their home security cameras showed someone entering or trying to enter their unlocked vehicles overnight. Nothing was taken:
—Sometime overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, Jan. 9 to 10, two motor vehicles parked outside the same house on Fairfield Avenue were entered. The owner told police that he checked his Ring surveillance camera and saw someone enter each of the cars at about 4:02 a.m. Nothing was stolen.
—At a house next door, a homeowner also reviewed his Ring surveillance camera the same morning showed someone trying to open the doors of his vehicle — but they were locked and not entered.
—A third resident of Fairfield Avenue told police that on Jan. 10 a home security camera showed someone entering his unlocked vehicle (again, nothing was taken). A police news release didn’t specify whether this was the same night or the following night that the other thefts were attempted on the street.
