Marie Ball, 86, passed away on Dec. 3. Her funeral is scheduled for Dec. 13.

She was born Nov. 5, 1930 in San Francisco, the only daughter of Irene and James Phillips, and sister to James and Edward.

She graduated from Miss Wilkins Private High School in the class of 1948. She attended college at the University of San Francisco.

In 1953 she married John Arthur Ball, Jr., of Chicago, a serving naval officer at the time of the Korean conflict. During the course of their marriage, they raised four children and relocated several times. They left the West Coast and Midwest behind and resided in Massapequa, N.Y. for 15 years followed by Darien for 35 years before finally taking up residence in Weddington.

Marie was actively involved in various charitable causes. While living in Massapequa, she worked for Mid Island Hospital in Bethpage, NY. She started as a volunteer and eventually took on a number of administrative and medical functions.

However, her main charitable focus was the American Cancer Society where she served as the president of her local Chapter. She co-chaired numerous fundraising events for the American Cancer Society in Darien.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, to whom she was married for almost 62 years. She leaves behind her four children: John, III and wife Carrie, Jamie and husband Brad, James and wife Lorie and Jodi and husband Steve; her eight grandchildren: Michael, Sean, Henry, Lily, Alex, John IV, Matthew and Courtney, and her two great-grandchildren, Dylan & Devon. She also leaves behind her brother Edward Phillips and sister in law, Geraldine O’Connell.

She will be remembered by those who loved her for her generosity of spirit, her youthful outlook, her love of all animals and the love and care she unstintingly gave to each of us.

There will be a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., Dec. 13 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy., Charlotte, N.C. with a one-hour visitation before the Mass. Burial will follow Mass at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Weddington, N.C. in the Family Estate Garden.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the American Cancer Society.
