It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of George Werbesky Jr. on Nov. 2. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love and special moments.
George, better known to his loved ones as Baldy, was born on Feb. 28, 1949 to George Werbesky Sr. and Martha Maleski Werbesky in Darien.
He was known for his creativity, generous nature, and simple outlook on life. He frequently spent time in his cellar, crafting everything from Christmas decorations to a variety of household projects. His family and many dogs were his pride and joy.
George dedicated many years to the grocery business, starting from Grade A in Shippan to Scott’s Corner in Pound Ridge, New York, and he became a prominent figure in the community.
In the later phase of his career, he transitioned to the role of a crossing guard, a position that brought him immense happiness. Here, he found joy in greeting the smiling faces of children and community members on their way to work and school. His lasting impact has left an enduring mark on the hearts of those he served and the community he cherished.
George’s spirit of generosity extended to the holiday season. He was renowned for hosting annual Christmas parties, complete with a visit from Santa and extravagant Christmas lights that he created himself in the cellar of his home. George encouraged parents to bring not only a gift for their child but also a donation for Toys for Tots, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring all children felt included.
Ever thoughtful, he kept extra gifts and candy canes on the side, ready to ensure that no child went without a present during the festive celebrations. George’s dedication to spreading joy and creating a sense of community continued to shine through in every facet of his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cathie, as well as his daughters Cheri and Theresa (Darren). George was also a proud grandpa to Ashlie (Aaron), Evan, and Jonathan. He loved them unconditionally, offering countless unforgettable memories, guidance, and support as they grew. His joy extended to his great-granddaughters, Lyla and Chloe.
A memorial will be held in celebration of George Werbesky Jr.’s life on Jan. 27, 2024 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Darien Community Association, 274 Middlesex Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Toys for Tots in his honor, as he firmly believed that everyone should experience the most joyous holidays.
