A COVID-19 vaccine clinic for children ages 5 to 11 will be held in the Town Hall gymnasium will be held for two days in November, and second doses for two days in December, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said in a Code Red message to the town Thursday night.

Seniors and others eligible for booster vaccines can get them on Tuesdays in the same gym, beginning Nov. 9.

Getting appointments goes through Darien Public Schools (for children), through Town Hall (for seniors) and through a state agency (for non-seniors getting booster shots).

The town hasn’t had a resident hospitalized for COVID-19 since last March, and Darien’s weekly positivity rate is 0.13. Ninety-eight percent of eligible Darien residents have had at least one vaccination (the most important shot is the first), and 91% are “fully” vaccinated.

“It has been a privilege of a lifetime to serve as your first selectman for the past 10 years,” Stevenson said in what is likely to be her last Code Red message to the town (barring some last minute emergency). “I’m deeply grateful for that honor.”

Full Text of First Selectman’s COVID-19 Update

Good evening, this is Jayme Stevenson with a final COVID-19 update as your First Selectman. From the start of the pandemic, there have been a total of 1,734 cases from 1,088 unique households.

Our last hospitalization was reported in March of this year. Darien’s weekly positivity rate is 0.13. Ninety-one percent of eligible residents are fully vaccinated and 98% have had at least one dose. There continues to be a significant decline in reported cases both town wide and in our schools.

Vaccine Clinics for Children, 5 to 11

Pediatric dose Pfizer vaccine has been approved for children ages 5 to 11. The Darien Health Department will be holding first-dose clinics for our kids in the Town Hall gymnasium on Nov. 13 and 20.

Second dose clinics will be held on Dec. 4 and 11. Darien Public Schools will be managing student vaccine appointments.

Vaccine Booster Shots

The CDC recommends vaccine boosters for people 65 and older, residents in long-term care settings, people aged 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions and people aged 18 to 64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission.

According to the CDC, it is acceptable to mix and match boosters from different vaccine manufacturers. We recommend you consult your personal physician when making decisions about booster vaccines.

Booster Shot/Flu Shot Clinic at Town Hall for Seniors

The town will be holding Moderna booster vaccine clinics in the Town Hall gymnasium on Tuesdays beginning Nov. 9.

Seniors can call the Darien Health (203-656-7320) or Human Service (203-656-7328) Departments to make an appointment. Non-seniors must make your appointment on-line through the state’s Vaccine Management System.

Seasonal flu vaccine will also be available at the booster clinics. COVID-19 boosters are free but seasonal flu shots cost $40 payable by cash, check, ConnectiCare insurance or Medicare Part B.
