You can get an introduction to 3D modeling and animation at Darien Library in an hourlong class from 4 to 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24.
By the end of the course, students will be capable of doing a simple model and animation of their own in Blender, free and open-source software.
— an announcement from Darien Library
3D modeling and animation are used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications, and video games.
Digital art and specifically 3D modeling have become a central component to emerging technologies like those used for the Metaverse.
You can register here for 3D Modeling with Blender.
In terms of equipment, students will just need ordinary computers and a two-button mouse with a wheel. The software needed is Blender 3D, which is completely free. Blender runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, so as long as you have a full operating system, it should work fine. We host classes by visiting in-person or virtually, depending on the distance.
This class should take no more than an hour with a break (optional), and depending on how familiar each student is with computing and modeling, the class may take on different forms.

About the Presenter
William Harrison is a Research Engineer with a Ph. D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan, and a Master’s in materials science engineering from the University of Florida. His expertise is in robotic AI, modeling, and simulation. William has been teaching 3D modeling and animation all over the country both virtual and in person for 12 years. He’s taught many ages ranging from 10 to 60.
William used to be utterly incapable of using any even semi-technical software. He has never been an artist, has never been good at drawing, and wasn’t even particularly bright. Through persistence and a love of 3D art, William has become proficient at using 3D software. He seeks to make the journey to creative freedom for others as short and fulfilling as possible.
