On Sunday, Feb. 11, 22 of Darien High School’s football players arrived at the Depot Youth Center in Darien. But instead of Blue Wave jerseys, they were wearing aprons, bearing whisks and mixing bowls, and ready to bake.
This was the annual “Men Making Pies” event where members of the team make pies to deliver to Darien’s first responders, New Covenant House, and DHS teachers.
— an announcement from the team
This is the seventh year that DHS Football has made pies for local community organizations. This year the team made 70 pies with flavors chosen by the team of key lime, pumpkin, and chocolate cream. In addition to delivering the pies, members of the team served dinner at New Covenant House’s soup kitchen on Feb. 13.
Coach Andy Grant said of the event, “The football program looks to build better student athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. But opportunities to serve our community are just as important. This event allows our players to share food with those who need a meal and a lighthearted moment, and with those who serve our communities.
We talk a lot about leaving a legacy and our goal is to be remembered as a great football team that helped improve the lives of others.”
The Darien High School Football Team is grateful to the sponsors of this event including Palmer’s Market and the Depot Youth Center.
