Andrew J. Wainacht “Andy” of Darien passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 8 after fighting through a long illness. He was 89.

Andrew Wainacht, 89, passed away on Aug. 8. A visiting hour will be held Aug. 18 in Darien, followed by interment at Spring Grove Cemetery.
He was born on June 3, 1936 in Norwalk, the son of the late Andrew and Theresa Hornyak Wainacht. Andrew was a graduate of Norwalk High School and Norwalk Community College, from which he received a degree in law enforcement. He was also a graduate of The FBI National Academy.
He proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps. Andy was a retired detective sergeant with the New Canaan Police Department, where many knew him as “Ducky.” After retirement, he worked many years as a school crossing guard at Hindley School.
Andrew is survived by his wife, Sharon McManus Wainacht of Darien. He is also survived by his daughter, Milissa Brigante (Daniel) of Old Saybrook; his son, Andrew Wainacht (Kim) of Putnam; his daughter, Suzanne Silverman (Richard) of Norwalk; and his daughter, Brittany Hasak (Zachary) of Trumbull.
Andy is also survived by nine grandchildren: Brennan, Kaleigh, Andrew (Emily), Spencer, Rebecca (Christopher), Tyler (Alessandra), Ryan (Rochelle), Harper and Amelia. Harper and Amelia called him “Bigby” and their love and affection lit up his days.
Andy is also survived by four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Andrew was predeceased by his younger brother, James, who had also served in the USMC and the New Canaan Police Department.
Andy’s family would like to especially thank the amazing help and support of the neighbors on Thomasina Lane for their unwavering assistance, along with Post 53 EMS, who responded with professionalism and compassion during the family’s time of need.

A visiting hour for friends and family will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 18, 2025 at Lawrence Funeral Home. A private burial at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien will immediately follow.
