Coleman J. Alexa, 97, of Palm City, Fl., passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 7 under the tender loving care of Treasure Coast Hospice. He had taught 9th grade students in Darien public schools.

He was born on Oct. 9, 1919 in Fairfield to Vera and Andrew Alexa. He was of the Catholic faith. He resided in Florida for the past 34 years, moving there from Weston.
Coleman enlisted in the Marines in February 1942 and was honorably discharged in September 1945. He participated in the Bismarck Archipelago, Treasury-Bougainville, New Georgia Group, and in the occupation of Guam, Marina Islands.
As a 9th grade teacher in Darien, he created wonderful memories for hundreds of young adults. He also embraced the art of stain glass in which he produced beautiful sentimental pieces. He was a painter and very talented with carpentry and wood making. He built several of his own homes and also did remodeling work.

He embraced the adventure of travel and visited much of the continental United States and Europe. He discovered many family relatives in Germany, England, Hungary and Romania.
Upon retiring in 1982, Coleman and his late wife, Gertrude built a home in Port St. Lucie and were snowbirds for over a decade, enjoying the sunshine and warmth.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Gertrude. He is survived by his two loving daughters: Mary Ellen Casey (James) of Louisville, Ky. and Annette Wadsworth (Christopher) of Palm City, Fl.; and his four cherished grandchildren, Nicole and Justin Casey and Alexa and Cameron Wadsworth.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated with full military honors at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church 1454 SW Mapp Road, Palm City, FL 34990 at a later date in the summer of 2017 followed by an inurnment at the St. Thomas Cemetery in Fairfield in the fall of 2017.
