To the editor:

The Noroton Fire Department would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the Darien community and our sponsors for their support of our annual Bingo and Block Party fundraiser. Over 1,000 families, friends and supporters of NFD attended fun filled evenings of bingo, live entertainment, great food, drink and camaraderie at the field across from Hindley Elementary School. This opportunity to connect with the community we serve as firefighters reaffirms our resolve to willingly continue to make the sacrifice of neighbors serving neighbors. We would not be able to hold this important fundraising event without the generous help of our sponsors including: All Seasons Marine Works, The Darien Sport Shop, Palmer’s Market, Darien Car Clinic, Jimmy’s Southside, Mama Carmela’s Deli, Papa Joe’s Italian Restaurant, Andrew Stefanou Salon, Corbo’s Deli, Ed Fitzmaurice from Anheuser Busch, City Carting, Orchard Tree Service, Springdale Florist and Bob LaBanca from Impression Point. Congratulations to the Ferguson Family on winning the 18’ Sea Hunt grand prize of the boat raffle!

Eleven members of the Noroton Fire Department completed a United States Coast Guard (“USCG”)-led Marine Search & Rescue (“MARSAR”) course this spring, further preparing their marine crews for the summer boating season in the waters around Darien. The course provided Noroton fire-rescue personnel with the latest, best practices for MARSAR operations. “This training provides our marine division with best practice techniques and tools in MARSAR operations.” said Noroton Fire Chief Jim O’Brien. “It enhances our readiness on Darien’s Long Island sound waters.

After Fire Threatens Home, Owners Thank Firefighters, Who Say They Can Always Use More Volunteers

A couple who own a home near Woodland Park thanked firefighters for dousing the recent fire that threatened their home, and the fire department says they can always use more help from people willing to volunteer. Darien police say that on April 20 a teenage boy set the fire at Woodland Park Nature Preserve that burned five acres and took about 60 firefighters two hours to extinguish. Here’s the letter (we’re using the names of the homeowners who told Noroton Fire Department that it could use their letter any way it wanted to support the department’s recruiting):

Dear Fire Department,

My husband and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your efforts this afternoon to successfully put out the fire in Woodland Park. As one of the houses that borders on the park, the fate of our home was in your hands today. Before your team arrived, I watched as the flames inched ever closer; those were some of the most helpless moments I have ever experienced.

Darien’s Fire Depts Open Doors to Kids and Potential Volunteers

All three Darien volunteer fire departments participated in a statewide day for open houses on Saturday in order to attract volunteers. Kids were also welcome. Not a large number came to the events, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a cool, drizzly day when many had beat it out of town for the April school break. Darien Fire Department, with passers-by spotting the open house downtown, had a location advantage over the other two departments and attracted about 100 visitors. There were perhaps a dozen families at the Noroton Fire Department and “a handful” at the Noroton Heights Fire Department, organizers said.
