Michael Greene, 57, Attorney Who Grew Up in Darien, Where a Funeral Mass Will Be Held

Michael Sutherland Greene, 57, of Granger, Indiana, died in the Center for Hospice on Easter morning, April 21, 2019, after struggling for years with health problems.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20, at St John Roman Catholic Church in Darien. He was born, in Denver on Dec. 10, 1961,  and raised in Darien by his mother, Julie Sutherland Rikert, and stepfather, John Rikert. He graduated from the University of Connecticut and worked in Washington D.C. as an economic analyst in the area of global warming, then entered law school at Indiana University in Bloomington. It is there that he met and married Bridgette Faulkner Greene, and together they moved to Elkhart, where he was a practicing attorney for many years.

Sallye J. M. Hutman-Howard passed away on April 19, 2019 surrounded by her family in Longmont, Colorado. Born Nov. 24, 1941 in Baltimore, Sallye Jane Mickle was the daughter of Abner Mickle and Kathleen Hinson. She grew up living in two worlds: on her parents’ dairy farm in Havre de Grace, Maryland, and with her aunt and uncle, Nancy and Robert Greene, in Miami, Florida and Darien. Despite growing up in two very different worlds, Sallye maintained a loving and free spirit.

Claudia Jeanne VanVoorhis Trant Christensen died peacefully at home on May 29, two days before her 95th birthday. She was born in Salt Lake City to Bertha Claudia Rich and Lemert Philips VanVoorhis. She went to Stewart School, graduated from East High and the University of Utah where she was a Chi Omega. Claudia attended Stanford Business School where she was one of three women in her class. After school, she had a rich and varied professional life as an English teacher at the University of Utah, an advertising and personnel manager at Keith O’Brien department store, copywriter at KSL radio, and assistant to the president at Christensen Diamond Products.

Gretchen Reiche Terhune, of Falmouth, Maine, died Wednesday, April 24 of a stroke at Maine Medical Center. She was 85. Born April 11, 1934 at the then Maine General Hospital in Portland, she was the daughter of Laura Christine Knudsen Reiche and Howard C. Reiche, who was for many years the Principal of Portland High School. Educated at Portland High School, she was a fiercely proud scholarship graduate in 1956 of Pembroke College in Brown University. She will be remembered as a warm, kind and loving person.

Ingeborg G. Browning, a longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Friday, April 26 at Stamford Hospital. She was 82. Born on April 6, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Adolf and Toni Färber. Ingeborg graduated from Stamford High School and Katherine Gibbs School. She worked as an executive secretary for International Salt Co.

Surrounded by family, Anna Bella Quigley Mazabras passed away peacefully on April 23 at her home just one day after her 80th birthday in Darien. Born on April 22, 1939 in Derry, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Quigley. Anna left Ireland in 1963 to come to New Canaan to work as a nanny before marrying her husband, Roger Louis Mazabras in 1966. Anna and Roger moved to Darien in 1968 and were employed by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church as the sextons for almost 30 years.

Marie Core Duffy Wootton died peacefully on April 11 in New Haven. She was 98. She was born in New Haven on June 25, 1920, the daughter of Marie Marsden Barron Duffy of Baltimore, Maryland, and William Core Duffy, MD, formerly of New Bern, North Carolina. She graduated from Prospect Hill School (now Hopkins) and Albertus Magnus College. She was predeceased by her husband, Philip Henry Wootton, Jr.

Surrounded by family, Phyllis M. Colin, 87, succumbed to heart-related complications on April 3 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport. She and her beloved husband, Robert, lived in Battery Park City in New York. They had resided in Darien from 1969 until 1994. During her years in Darien, Phyllis was very active in the YMCA, serving as a Red Cross volunteer life guard and swim teacher to both young children and adults.

Carol “Corky” Lindemann Studley, of Shalimar, Florida and East Orleans, Massachusetts passed away on April 7, 2019 at 83. Born in Warsaw, New York on July 18, 1935. She graduated from Hastings-on-Hudson High School in 1953, where as a three- sport athlete, she was inducted into The Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. She graduated from Syracuse University in 1957 with an education degree and was a member of Tri Delta sorority. Corky spent the summers of 1944 through 1959 at Camp Wono — now Cape Cod Sea Camps where she was a camper, counselor and head counselor.

Former Darien resident Carolyn Schoonmaker, passed away peacefully in Naples, Florida on the morning of April 2 with her two sons, Sam and Eric, by her side. In passing, she rejoins her beloved husband, Sam, who predeceased her. She is survived by two sisters, a stepsister, two sons, four grandchildren and numerous other family and friends. Carolyn was born in Englewood, New Jersey, the second daughter of Frederick and Carol Peters. A natural athlete, she grew up throwing and catching a baseball with the Yankees, who practiced in the park near her house.
