To give our young visitors a better understanding of basic chemistry and how it impacts the world around them, Stepping Stones Museum for Children is proud to partner with our neighbors from King Industries Inc. on Thursday, Nov. 1, to present STEAM Night.

STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. From 5 to 8 p.m., during the museum’s monthly Get Into It! FREE evening, Stepping Stones visitors will be able to enjoy FREE admission; hands-on, scientific experimentation and demonstrations; FREE giveaways from King Industries and other fun and engaging activities throughout the museum.

Chemistry is all around us. Just about everything that we see, hear, smell, taste and touch involves some sort of chemistry. It is the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat.

It’s also the paint on our cars, the hydraulic oil in our planes, the rubber hoses used to water our gardens, the microprocessors in our smartphones and so much more.  Simply put, we use chemistry every day in one way or another.

Chemists do so much more than simply mix beakers of solutions in sterile laboratories. They develop and create practical, real-life applications for chemical processes.

During this STEAM Night event, our young visitors will get to interact with some of the top-notch chemists from the Norwalk-based King Industries and possibly be inspired to make a career in a scientific field in the future.

Also during this Get Into It! FREE evening, visitors will also have a first-hand opportunity to learn how some of the products that King Industries manufactures impact and enhance everyday life.

More than anything, STEAM Night will reinforce the concept that chemistry is fun!  Featuring dazzling demonstrations and hands-on activities spread throughout the museum, the chemists from King Industries, Inc. will show off some of the “magic” and fun that can occur when chemistry comes to life.

Children will learn about friction, density, states of matter and many other important scientific concepts in fun and engaging ways. There will be learning extension opportunities as to they’ll take home some of what they create during the event and receive bags with instructions for safe, at-home experimentation.

Chemistry is all around our children, and the better they know chemistry, the better they know our world.

Get Into It! FREE is an important component of Stepping Stones Museum for Children’s Open Arms initiative, which ensures that the museum’s educational exhibits and programs are accessible to all audiences regardless of financial, cultural, language or special needs barriers.

Through this inclusive program, children, families and schools are welcome to enjoy the museum’s safe and enriching environment, which nurtures creativity, play and lifelong learning.

In 2018, Stepping Stones looks to serve 75,000 individuals through Open Arms at an operational cost of $750,000.
