Step into the past at Pequot Museum’s 17th Century Encampment with re-enactors showcasing various aspects of daily New England life in the 1600s on the weekend of  at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum. The Pequot Museum will feature a live 17th century encampment complete with Native American, English, Dutch and French re-enactors showcasing various aspects of daily New England life in the 1600s. Travel back in time at the museum farmstead to experience Native American and European life in the 17th Century! Participate in wampum making, cooking, militia drills, cannon drills, basket making, pottery, archery, lacrosse, children’s games and more. Explore living history displays from the Pequot War (1636-1637) and King Philips War (1675-1677) periods.

‘Evening Under the Stars’ Gala Fundraiser for Darien Arts Center on Saturday, June 24

The Darien Arts Center invites the community to support its first-ever gala fundraiser, “An Evening Under the Stars,” from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 24. The benefit will feature live entertainment from Lew and Mary Green and Friends, as well as cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a raffle. It takes place at the DAC’s Weatherstone Studio and Garden at 2 Renshaw Road, behind Town Hall

Proceeds from An Evening Under the Stars will benefit the DAC, which relies solely on donations, ticket sales, tuitions and grants for funding. Over 6,000 individuals participate in programs and attend performances at the DAC annually, with over 1,000 students from toddlers to seniors taking classes in dance, visual arts, music, theatre, and martial arts. DAC outreach programs include partnerships with the Darien Library, Darien Nature Center, Atria, Maplewood, Darien After Schools Program and Overtime Athletics.

Stonewall is a drama about a fictional young man caught up during the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) is forced to leave behind friends and loved ones when he is kicked out of his parent’s home and flees to New York. You can watch this film at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 5 in the Darien Library Community Room. Alone in Greenwich Village, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the local watering hole The Stonewall Inn; however, this shady, mafia-run club is far from a safe-haven. As Danny and his friends experience discrimination, endure atrocities and are repeatedly harassed by the police, we see a rage begin to build.

Darien High School DECA Business Club Brings Home International Trophy

Darien High School brought home its first international DECA trophy since business teacher Claudia Gray started the local chapter of this club four years ago. Six Darien students traveled to California to compete against winners from 50 states and five countries at the International Career Development Conference on April 26 — 29. The students earned the right to compete at the international level by ranking top in their designated competition area in the Connecticut state competition in March. ____________

The ICDC event brought together more than 18,000 industry leaders, policymakers, teacher-advisers, and the next generation of leaders in business and entrepreneurship. Student members from the United States, Canada, China, Korea, Mexico and Spain took part in several days of leadership activities and competition.

Criminal Mischief: Stop Signs and Traffic Gates Vandalized on Kensett Lane

Stop signs and traffic gates were damaged on Kensett Lane by unknown suspects, police said. At 8:08 a.m. on Monday, May 29,  a resident of Kensett Lane reported to police that two traffic fences and a stop sign had been hit and damaged on the Kensett property. The damage was probably done by a vehicle, police said. The cost to repair the damage is unknown, police said, and officers are following up with property management. There are no suspects at this time.

Darien Summer Nights Concert Series for 2017 Runs June 23 Through Sept 15

For each of the last six summers, Darien residents have been treated to free concerts in Grove Street Plaza on Friday nights, and this year’s series is promising to be bigger and better than any before it. The Darien Summer Nights Concert Series was launched by Darien residents David Genovese and Penny Glassmeyer, who head up Baywater Properties and Grove Street Plaza, respectively. ___________

During the winter of 2008/2009 the two decided it was time to do something positive for residents who would be staying around town because of the unsettled economic climate, and to encourage them to shop locally and support Darien’s merchants. Borrowing from the successful Alive at Five Concert Series in Stamford, Baywater Properties and Grove Street Plaza sponsored a concert series in the summer of 2009 that was held in various venues around downtown. The first night of the series will be Friday, June 23.

Registration is set to open Monday, June 5 here or at the Library. Participants who register between June 5 and June 15 will be entered into a special raffle for an awesome camp prize! The Library will draw a winner on Friday, June 16th at 5:30 p.m.

The Library offers two summer reading options for children: one for pre-readers and one for independent readers. Pre-readers aged five and under are welcome to join the “Read to Me Club” and use a Read to Me Log to record all the books read together. For every 10 books (up to 30 books) you share with a grown-up, you will be entered in a special Read to Me Club raffle.

Racial Slurs in Chalk Found at Weed Beach Tennis Court

Someone wrote a racial slur and drew a swastika on a tennis court at Weed Beach on Saturday, but police found the vandalism was removable because it had all been done in chalk. At 10:54 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, officers at Weed Beach saw the racist markings on one of the tennis courts. There was a third marking in chalk, but it was illegible. There was no permanent damage to the court, no witnesses have been found and police have no suspects.

Police: Driver Caught With Marijuana in Car on Hoyt Street

An 22-year-old driver seen crossing the double-yellow line on Hoyt Street was caught with marijuana after being stopped by police. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

At 12:57 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, an officer on patrol was traveling north on Hoyt Street near Camp Avenue. A vehicle in front of him crossed the double-yellow dividing line twice. The officer stopped the vehicle. The driver, a resident of Mulberry Street in the Springdale section of Stamford, said he was driving home from work and didn’t realize that he crossed the dividing lines.

‘Flamboyance’ of Flamingos Flock for the Summer at Maritime Aquarium

No bird may claim a cultural influence as big and long as the flamingo, and no place in Connecticut is featuring the big pink icons this summer except The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. A small flock, or “flamboyance,” of flamingos will be standing — often, on one leg — in the aviary on the Maritime Aquarium’s riverfront courtyard. They started on Memorial Day weekend and will be there through Labor Day. (That’s May 27 to Sept. 4.) The exhibit is free with Aquarium admission.
