Darien TV79 is now offering live-streaming video on the internet, so when it covers a meeting or event in town, you can see it not only on Cablevision’s Channel 79 but on your tablet, mobile phone or computer.

After almost a decade of broadcasting Town boards and commission meetings on Cablevision’s Channel 79, the introduction of “live streaming” means that TV79 has gone from local audience to an international one.
“We used to be available only on Cablevision and only to subscribers in Darien,” says TV79 General Manager and founder, David Dever. “But now anybody can watch our programming on any device — computer, tablet or smart-phone — and see the same stream of programming as on our cable TV channel.”
In addition, all TV79 programs are archived on its Vimeo channel, for on-demand viewing online. Launched in January 2015, the TV79 Vimeo channel has had over 8,000 viewings of more than 200 programs since inception.
“Our goal has always been to bring Town government to Darien residents,” says Program Director Jim Cameron. “Whether you watch a Board of Selectman meeting live on Cablevision, a day later on Vimeo or stream the video to your iPad on your commute home from Grand Central, you can now keep up with what’s happening in town that affects your life.”
The new video stream is made possible by a partnership with the Darien Board of Education, whose information technology team established the feed.
Staffed by volunteer leaders, TV79 is funded by grants from the Area Nine Cable Council and the town budget. The station’s operations are overseen by the TV79 Advisory Board following operating guidelines established by the Board of Selectmen.
To better gauge the viewing patterns of its audience, TV79 is in the middle of conducting an online survey. Residents are encouraged to take the nine question survey here.
