Yankee Magazine is lauding The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk as the “Best Family Attraction” in New England.

The May/June issue of the publication — on newsstands now — includes its Editor’s Choice Awards for Best of New England 2016.

In declaring The Maritime Aquarium as “Best Family Attraction,” Yankee Magazine’s editors wrote:

Harbor seals’ antics tickle preschoolers. Tweens can spend all day petting jellies, sharks and stingrays. Even ‘Game of Thrones’-loving grown-ups find the dragons – including America’s only black dragon on public view – fascinating. Add in IMAX movies and excursions aboard a revolutionary new $2.7 million hybrid electric research vessel, and the only aquarium devoted to Long Island Sound is an all-day fun destination.

The Yankee Magazine honor supports The Maritime Aquarium ranking as the No. 1 aquarium in all of New England by travelers who post reviews on TripAdvisor.com. In earning TripAdvisors’ 2015 Travelers’ Choice Award in September, The Maritime Aquarium’s positive reviews place it at No. 20 on TripAdvisor’s list of Top 25 aquariums in the U.S.

“The TripAdvisor award — and now the Yankee Magazine honor — directly reflect the positive experiences and opinions of our visitors, and the hard work of our staff and volunteers,” said Dr. Brian Davis, president of The Maritime Aquarium.

“We are truly pleased and honored to have this recognition, and we will continue to strive to make The Maritime Aquarium an amazing family experience.”

With a paid circulation of approximately 300,000 and a total audience of nearly 2 million, Yankee Magazine is the only magazine devoted to New England through its coverage of travel, home, food and features.

Yankee magazine’s seal of approval goes to the place with seals.

The Maritime Aquarium is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to educate visitors about — and to create stewards for — Long Island Sound. It accomplishes this by allowing visitors to get close to more than 250 species native to the Sound and its watershed, including sharks, seals, sea turtles, river otters, jellyfish and other animals.

One of the top places for family fun in Connecticut, the Aquarium also features hands-on educational programs and displays, public study cruises out onto the Sound, and Connecticut’s largest IMAX movie theater, with a screen that’s six stories high.
