Police suspect a burglary of a home Wednesday on Talmadge Hill Road (first reported, exclusively, by Darienite.com on Thursday) may be connected to other recent burglaries in Norwalk and New Canaan and possibly older ones in Darien.

Police gave this account of the Talmadge Hill Road burglary:

Sometime between 9:30 a.m., when the husband and wife who live there left their home, and 10 a.m., entry was made into the home through an exterior garage door and forcing open an interior door between the garage and the rest of the house. The house has an alarm system, but it wasn’t on at the time.

A jewelry box was taken from the master bedroom on the first floor, and an end table had been forced open. In a closet, a lockable fire box in a drawer of the end table was missing.

In a downstairs home office, a stereo was removed. The jewelry was largely costume jewelry, not worth much, and the owner of the stereo said he was planning to discard it anyway. The victims didn’t give police the value of the items taken as of the time of the initial report.

Loot wasn’t the only aspect of the burglary that appears to have been unlucky for the thief or thieves. The get-away also seems to be marked by bad luck.

At about 10 a.m. on Wednesday, a Darien police officer was driving home from an extra-duty job heard about a vehicle that Norwalk police were looking for in connection with a burglary in that city. Then he saw what looked like the vehicle on New Canaan Avenue (Route 123) and saw what was initially identified as a “safe” which was apparently dumped from it.

The officer recovered the safe — which turned out to be the fire lock box stolen from the Talmadge Hill Road within the previous 30 minutes. Darien police aren’t saying more about what happened to the vehicle.

Some papers from the lock box identified it as coming from the Talmadge Hill Road home, where police went and discovered the burglary before the homeowners did.

Darien Police say they have an “active investigation” into the incident, although they haven’t applied for an arrest warrant. They are looking into similarities between this incident and others in Norwalk and New Canaan.

In a separate burglary on the other side of town, a homeowner reported an attempted break-in the same day on Littlebrook Road North.
