The guest speaker was Matt Baier, owner of Matt Baier Organizing, LLC and member of The National Association of Professional Organizers.

Mr. Baier’s presentation included all aspects of clutter and why it’s harder to get rid of clutter today, where to begin to get rid of items, strategies for letting go of things, and how to prevent piles of objects from building up in your home.

He showed a series of “before and after” photos, revealing the furniture and decor often hidden under piles of accumulated things.

He defined clutter as “postponed decisions that create barriers because it is less important stuff that gets in the way of more important things.” He noted, “One main strategy for letting go of clutter is to not ask where it should go, but to ask yourself why you are keeping it.”

Mr. Baier also suggested a regret-free process when making decisions about clutter, by advising “When in doubt, don’t throw it out.”

He recommended that random piles of things need to be carefully sorted out and those things identified as “to be kept” should be stored in a more organized fashion, in spaces of the home that do not detract from the rooms’ purpose.

Following the informative presentation attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Gina Blum, At Home In Darien Executive Director, remarked, “Mr. Baier’s speech was very motivating and attendees felt encouraged to go home and begin the process of ridding their homes of clutter.”
