After an off-duty Darien police officer saw what he thought might be a drug sale at Pear Tree Point Beach, a Darien teenager was charged with possessing marijuana. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

At 6:22 p.m. on Monday, July 17, an off-duty Darien Police Officer notified headquarters that he observed what he believed to be a narcotics transaction occurring at Pear Tree Point Beach. The officer heard the juvenile saying “I’m sitting on a gram” — a common phrase used by drug dealers indicating that they have drugs to sell. The officer gave a description of a vehicle connected to either the teenager or the person with whom the teen was talking. A patrol officer saw the vehicle traveling south on Pear Tree Point Road and pull into the beach parking lot.
