Two OPUS Fundraisers Take In $175K for Person-to-Person, But Food Drive Falls Short

Through two fundraisers this spring, OPUS raised $175,000 to fund Person-to-Person programs that have a direct benefit to children in need in our neighboring communities. — Most of this article, about OPUS’ fundraising, is from an OPUS announcement. Darienite.com has added information from an announcement on the May 12  Person-to-Person “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive. Masquerade Ball
The first was a Masquerade Ball held at the Country Club of Darien on Saturday, April 21. On this beautiful spring evening, guests wore black and white attire and, in keeping with the theme, donned festive eye masks.

HURRY: Leave a Bag of Groceries at Your Mailbox for Saturday’s ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Food Drive

Darien residents are being asked to leave a bag of groceries — not needing refrigeration or freezing, obviously — at their mailbox on Saturday morning, May 12, Person-to-Person announced. Here’s the announcement:
Since 1992, Person-to-Person (P2P) has been the designated recipient of grocery donations collected in Darien during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. “Stamp Out Hunger” is the largest food drive for Person-to-Person each year. With 9 percent of Fairfield County households living below the poverty level and another 23 percent struggling to afford the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter, hunger and food insecurity is an issue for many of our neighbors. The number of people living in poverty plus those who earn less than the basic cost-of-living is significant in the communities served by the P2P Food Pantry in Darien:

14 percent of New Canaan households,
16 percent of Darien households and
35 percent of Stamford households

During the summer months, Food Pantry demand increases because many families are providing three meals a day to children who qualify for free and reduced-price meals during the school year.

Tickets are on sale for the OPUS for Person-to-Person spring Masquerade Ball to be held Saturday, April 21, at the newly renovated Country Club of Darien. The ball’s proceeds will support Person-to-Person (P2P), specifically P2P’s programs directly benefitting children — including, Campership scholarships for children and youth in need, grants to families, the Holiday Toy Store, Baby Basics layettes for new mothers, and Scholarships for college. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and guests in formal black and/or white attire will don masks as they sip cocktails overlooking the beautifully-manicured Country Club of Darien golf course. After cocktail hour, guests will be seated at a gourmet dinner followed by dancing to the nationally acclaimed King of Hearts band. And for the first time this year, guests can plan on celebrating into the wee hours at the afterparty from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. (admission to the afterparty is included in the ticket price).
