Brian J. Wood, a resident of Rowayton for over 30 years and a former longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2016 in Norwalk. He was 66. Born on May 7, 1950 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Arthur Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (O’Connor) Wood. Brian attended Darien public schools.
Marie Therese Ball of Weddington, N.C. died peacefully on Dec. 3. She was 86. She was born Nov. 5, 1930 in San Francisco, the only daughter of Irene and James Phillips, and sister to James and Edward.
Nancy Eagan Grant of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on Nov. 7 at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers. She was 79 years old. She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, John C. “Jack” Grant, III; four children JohnT. Grant, Meg McColgan, Carolyn Ganley, Kathy Wolfenden; two sons in law, Danny Weiss and Mike McColgan; five grandchildren, TJ, Ellie, Gail, Grant, Deanna; and her cousin Loretta Boll.
Susan Sacket Haigh Carver died peacefully in her sleep on Nov. 29 after enduring an arduous battle with Alzheimer’s disease since 2011. Her loving family was by her side at the time of her passing. She was 80 years old. Born in New York City on March 26, 1936 to Frances DeValen Haigh & Thomas D. Haigh, Sue was raised in Darien.
Albert Bruggemeyer died on Dec. 2 at his home in Aston Gardens, Fl. He would have been 90 next month. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Georgia Bruggemeyer. Born in Chicago to Albert and Josephine Bruggemeyer, Al was the fourth of five children.
On Sunday, Dec. 4, Michael G. Ryba passed from this earth to his final happy hunting grounds while holding the hand of Joyce, his devoted wife of 67 years. A loving husband and father, Michael was born May 22, 1927 at home in Darien, to Helen (Wissman) Ryba and Michael Ryba. After graduating from Darien High School in 1945 he immediately joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a training sergeant in Ft. Bliss, Texas.
Robert Birney Crane of Darien crossed the bar on Wednesday Nov. 30.
Born to Albert Eli Crane and Florence Luray Overton Crane on Feb. 8, 1920 in Plainfield, N.J., Bob thoroughly enjoyed life for over 96 years. He moved to Darien with his family at the age of 8. Bob attended Miss Thomas’s School and Saint Luke’s Academy before graduating from the Darien High School in 1936.
Harvey Lester Roseman of Fairfield, founder of David Harvey Jewelers in Darien and Norwalk, passed away on Friday, Dec. 2 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was 92. Mr. Roseman was born in Detroit, a son of the late Frederick and Anna Roseman, and lived in Fairfield since 1954. Mr. Roseman was a longtime member of Congregation Beth El in Fairfield.
Eugene F. “Gene” Kelly, 90, of Tampa, a retired financial executive and PepsiCo vice president, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 27. He raised his family partly in Darien and played the ukulele for entertainment. Gene Kelly was born and raised in Jersey City, N.J., and was the son of Dr. James E. and Elizabeth E. Kelly. He raised his family in Mountainside, N.J., and Darien before moving to Tampa 32 years ago with his wife.
Michael Vincent Principe, 70, of Darien passed away on Nov., 26, in his sleep. Born in New York City on Nov. 9, 1946, Michael was the son of the late Thomas and Carmela Principe. A resident of Darien for the past 24 years, Michael grew up in New York City’s Little Italy and forever took pride in his old neighborhood. He remained in New York for college, graduating from the School of Visual Arts.
Anne Brown Callahan, born Jan. 15, 1979, a lifelong resident of Darien and graduate of Kent School, left us on Friday, Nov. 25. Anne leaves behind her loving husband, David, two spirited boys, her parents, siblings, three junkyard dogs, a pile of random craft projects and a heartbroken network of family and friends. Her love of reading was matched only by her keen interest in movies, celebrity gossip, crossword puzzles, cooking, documentaries and NPR podcasts.
Carol Joy Schmidt McEwan, a former longtime resident of Darien, died on Nov. 23, 2016 at the age of 90. She was predeceased by her husband Preston Wayne McEwan, who passed away just eight short weeks ago and who she missed greatly. They were married for 64 years. She was born in Fond du Lac, Wisc.
Anthony “Tony” Pomponi, 83, of Darien passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Tony was born in Stamford on Aug. 17, 1933 to the late Stefano and Rosalinda Silvestri Pomponi. Tony attended Stamford schools and graduated from J.M. Wright Technical High School, Class of 1952.
John Callahan Moler passed away peacefully at home Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016. He was born June 8, 1926, to Rosemary and Harold Moler in Oklahoma City, Okla. He graduated from Classen High School in 1944 and served in the Pacific as a signalman 3rd class before graduating from Oklahoma University and marrying his high school sweetheart, Betty Jean Golson, in 1949. They had one daughter, Carey Loraine.
Marjory June Diemer Menzel, Age 90 of Williamsburg, Va and formerly Darien, died peacefully on Nov. 18, 2016. She was born March 3, 1926 in New York City to Elmer Clyde and Charlotte Lillian Diemer. Marjory grew up in Westchester County, N.Y. She attended Columbia University and worked for Marshall Field’s as a buyer in New York City. She met her future husband Rene Menzel at the Anchor and Saber Club in New York City.
