After a police officer saw a white Audi being driven without license plates on Heights Road, the traffic stop led to the arrest of the Darien owner on charges of failing to appear in court on a previous arrest, police said. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

At 8:25 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, the officer saw the car going east on Heights Road. The car was stopped near the intersection of Heights Road and Edgerton Street. The driver told the officer that the car belonged to the passenger, an 18-year-old resident of Allen O’Neill Drive.

A green Volkswagen without a front license plate and a rear plate “not on file” was spotted by a Darien police officer, which led to the driver being stopped and, ultimately, arrested on a drug possession charge, police said. Police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

At about 3:57 p.m., Sunday Oct. 8, the officer saw the vehicle being driven east somewhere on Middlesex Road. It is illegal to drive without a front license plate in Connecticut. The officer checked out the license plate number from the rear plate and found it wasn’t on file.

If you drive without a front license plate in Darien, a police officer may stop you. If you’re smoking marijuana in the car at some time before the traffic stop, the officer may well smell it, resulting in a fine. And if you’ve got even more marijuana stashed somewhere in the car — such as more than half an ounce under a child’s safety seat in the back seat — then police K-9 Kenny may indicate it’s there if the dog is brought in for a “free air sniff” outside the vehicle. Then police may find it when they search the car. Darien police say all that happened to a 27-year-old Rowayton man whose vehicle was stopped near the intersection of Tokeneke Road and Driftway Lane.
