Darien firefighters joined firefighters in New Canaan and Wilton to battle a house fire on South Avenue in New Canaan late Sunday near the Darien town line. At about 7:43 p.m. Sunday, New Canaan Fire Department members, career and volunteer, raced to the blaze at 986 South Ave. The road is state Route 124, which is Mansfield Avenue in Darien (see map below). It wasn’t immediately clear which structure caught fire or how — the property includes a 1790-built house and cottage, as well as a barn, tax records show. It also was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured.

One man was injured when he tried to put out a fire Thursday that caused significant damage to a house at 93 Holmes Ave., Darien police said. Police gave this description of the incident:

Police and firefighters were called to the fire at 12:51 p.m., and when they arrived, flames could be seen on the front porch, the porch roof, on the wall at the front of the house and near an upstairs window. A woman, 55, and man, 18, were on the front porch, leaving the house as police arrived. A third person, the 55-year-old man, was inside, using water to try to put the fire out. Police also started to fight the fire, using fire extinguishers, but that didn’t work.
