Attempt Made to Break into House on Littlebrook Road North

A break-in was attempted at a house on Little Brook Road North last Wednesday, Oct. 21, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the homeowner saw pry marks on a damaged front door. The door was still locked when the homeowner discovered the pry marks, so it appears the burglar or burglars weren’t able to open the door to get inside the house in the southeast quarter of the town, a bit north of Tokeneke Road. Police asked around the neighborhood, but nobody else saw anything or said they had anything stolen. The incident occurred on the same day as a daytime burglary on Talmadge Hill Road at the far northern end of town.

Police suspect a burglary of a home Wednesday on Talmadge Hill Road (first reported, exclusively, by Darienite.com on Thursday) may be connected to other recent burglaries in Norwalk and New Canaan and possibly older ones in Darien. Police gave this account of the Talmadge Hill Road burglary:

Sometime between 9:30 a.m., when the husband and wife who live there left their home, and 10 a.m., entry was made into the home through an exterior garage door and forcing open an interior door between the garage and the rest of the house. The house has an alarm system, but it wasn’t on at the time. A jewelry box was taken from the master bedroom on the first floor, and an end table had been forced open. In a closet, a lockable fire box in a drawer of the end table was missing.

A burglary took place at a home on Talmadge Hill Road at the far northern end of town Wednesday in which a suspect leaving the scene dropped a safe, Police Chief Duane Lovello said. Lovello, who spoke at the Police Commission’s meeting on Wednesday, gave out very little information on the new case, but described police as being only “a couple of steps behind the suspect.” The police investigation is active, he said.

An announcement from Darien Police:

Home security tips while you’re on vacation:

An empty house is a tempting target for a burglar so make sure you do your best to have your home look occupied while you are away:

Ask close friends, family, or neighbors to watch your house. Give them your contact information in case they need to get a hold of you. Never announce your intention on traveling or vacationing blogs, email groups, Facebook, Twitter, or other social networking sites and remember if you check-in on Foursquare or Facebook, everyone knows you aren’t home! Install good locks on the doors and windows and use them. Never leave a house key hidden outside of your home.
