Here’s the low down on what’s up around town:

Pre-K students at Methodist Family Center Preschool recently enjoyed a visit from Elizabeth Merow, Community Outreach Manager at The Connecticut Humane Society, and several of her furry friends. Through games and interactive exercises, the children learned about the preferred foods and habitats of different animals, and how each like to be touched and cared for. To thank Ms. Merow for spending time with them, the class presented her with items to be donated to pets at a local animal shelter. “This was such a special event for our students, from start to finish. They worked so hard to collect items from the Humane Society’s Wish List, and then were rewarded with such an engaging and educational experience.

XL Catlin, a global property and casualty insurance company with an office in Stamford’s South End, has awarded an $8,000 grant to Person-to-Person, which the agency will use for its scholarship program. Many of the students receiving scholarships are the first in their families to attend college, said Ceci Maher, executive director of the charity. A total of 80 percent of the students P2P helps go on to graduate from college — a rate  a well above the national average of 26 percent for college students from low-income households, according to P2P. Not only is the company giving money, but employees from XL Catlin regularly volunteer at Person-to-Person. ***

What’s up from all around town and a bit beyond Darien — notable news notes:

The Darien town government closed on its purchase of 41 Hecker Ave., a  1.2-acre tract which will become open space on the northern side of Spring Grove Cemetery. After a long delay, the town bought the land from the cemetery on June 29, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said at Monday’s Board of Selectmen meeting. “I want to thank the Darien Land Trust for this small but very unique public/private partnership to preserve the 1.2 acres,” she said. “I appreciate the patience and generosity of the Spring Grove Cemetery board for their land offering and for their patience over the last four years. “We began this process in March of 2013, believe it or not, and it took us all that time to work through the town approvals and grant funding process, but we have it, and we will discuss next year what, if anything, we want to do with it.”

Kindergarten and first grade classrooms at Holmes Elementary School recently became living laboratories through the High Touch High Tech program. Students learned about the five senses with hands-on experiments and interactive investigations led by scientists Mr. O and Mark Goldstein. Other students learned about the forces of gravity, friction and magnetism by doing hands-on experiments led by High Touch High Tech scientist Stacy Smith. The kids discovered how much they rely on their senses and how easy they are to fool using pencils, flashlights and sandpaper. High Touch High Tech has provided enriching science experience to students for the last decade.
