More than 250 volunteers gathered in three shifts on Sunday, March 13 in Saint Luke’s Parish Hall to pack over 50,000 healthy meals. The meals were formulated by Feeding Children Everywhere, the Orlando, FL-based nonprofit that empowers people to fight hunger. At a cost of 25 cents per serving, the Hunger Project meals represented $12,500 in donations by Saint Luke’s and participating volunteers. To the beat of rock and roll, six assembly lines at Saint Luke’s competed for bragging rights for the most meals packed. Volunteers of all ages—from toddlers to ninety-year-olds—scooped lentils, rice, dried vegetables and sea salt into 6-serving plastic bags.
