After a police officer saw a white Audi being driven without license plates on Heights Road, the traffic stop led to the arrest of the Darien owner on charges of failing to appear in court on a previous arrest, police said. Darien police gave this account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

At 8:25 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, the officer saw the car going east on Heights Road. The car was stopped near the intersection of Heights Road and Edgerton Street. The driver told the officer that the car belonged to the passenger, an 18-year-old resident of Allen O’Neill Drive.

Not showing up to court, even for a relatively minor charge, can get you an arrest at an inopportune time, and you’ve got to come up with a bond before police release you. Here’s how that situation can get worse, even without you committing anything like a major crime. Much worse. You don’t show up for court when you’ve got several minor charges against you. Warrants for your arrest go out, and if police come across you in the days, weeks, months or possibly years ahead, you’ll get arrested.

The call came in at 1:32 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The woman, a Darien resident in her early 50s, told police she had not been lying on the sidewalk. She had stopped and was just looking down, she said.
