Moped Locked with Chain Reported Stolen from Noroton Heights Railroad Station Bike Rack

A moped valued at $2,000 was stolen from the bike racks at Noroton Heights Railroad Station sometime between Thursday, Sept. 26 and Saturday, Sept. 28. At 5:20 p.m., Saturday, the theft was reported to police. A police announcement didn’t specify what time of day the man left the moped there or when he later discovered it had been taken, along with the lock.

Darien police say they caught a Stamford man and a Norwalk man trying to steal a motor scooter from Darien Railroad Station, and police say they have surveillance video of the men stealing a scooter on Sept. 2. Police gave this account (accusations not proven in court) of the matter:

Another motor scooter has been reported stolen in town, and Darien police say they have video surveillance of two people riding off after the thefts of two scooters at the Noroton Heights Railroad Station. Latest theft

In the most recently reported theft, a resident of Hollow Tree Ridge Road who lives near Wee Burn Country Club told police on Wednesday, July 29 that sometime between the previous Thursday and Sunday his 2013 Yamaha Zuma scooter was taken. It had been parked on the driveway outside the garage, and the owner remembered seeing it on Wednesday, July 22 or Thursday before leaving on a trip that day. He returned from the trip, then noticed the scooter missing on Tuesday, the day before he reported the theft to police. The vehicle is valued at $2,500.

A woman who parked her unlocked scooter at the Noroton Heights Railroad Station on Saturday, July 11, found it stolen two hours later, police said. The motorized bike, a red and white ZHNG-BMS 50 cc scooter, is valued at $2,000. According to Darien police:

The woman, a 39-year-old Stamford resident, parked her vehicle on the south side of the station at 4:30 p.m. then returned to it two hours later. The police report didn’t explain why she parked there for that period of time. When she did return, she found the scooter missing.

Recently Darien Police officers recovered a stolen scooter as a result of a motor vehicle stop.  The scooter had never been reported stolen but through the officer’s investigation, it was determined that it was taken from the Darien train station approximately two years prior. 

Scooters are being stolen at an alarming rate in our area and in the surrounding communities.  Many thefts are from train station parking lots and other commercial areas. A thief can steal your scooter in less than 20 seconds!  Alarmingly, many owners do not lock or secure their scooters thereby presenting opportunistic theft. However, as with any vehicle, it’s always important to take the time to properly lock your scooter to protect against theft and prevent this crime from reoccurring.
