No Lifeguard on Duty

Limited Lifeguard Coverage Coming to Weed, Pear Tree Point Beaches

Starting next week, through Sept. 3, there will be only limited lifeguard coverage at both Weed Beach and Pear Tree Point Beach, the Parks & Recreation Department has announced. The reason: There are a limited number of lifeguards at the beaches, and some are getting ready for fall sports in school or going back to school or college, a Parks & Rec official said. “Signs will be placed at both beaches notifying the public as to dates and hours of lifeguard coverage,” the announcement said. “Guarded swim areas will be determined by lifeguards on a daily basis.

You can register starting late in August for fall programs administered by Darien Parks and Recreation Department, and there will be a lottery for paddle tennis block time. Boat Safe Connecticut, LLC comes to Darien to offer this eight hour course that will meet the requirements to obtain a Connecticut Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation with Waterski endorsement from the CT DEEP. Class will meet on Tuesday, August 7th and Thursday, August 9th from 6 – 10 PM at the Darien Town Hall.

Earth Day Party on Saturday, April 21 at Darien Nature Center

The Darien Nature Center and Darien Parks & Recreation Department have teamed up to host a family fun Earth Day Party at the Nature Center on Saturday, April 21 from noon to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The celebration includes a family scavenger hunt around Cherry Lawn Park, local environmental groups hosting activity tables, animal encounters, an Instagram photo contest, Uncle’s Deli hot dog cart, campfire s’mores, Ben’s Ice Cream Truck, and more! Scavenger hunt prizes include tree saplings donated by Almstead Trees. “Every smile and joyful moment spent in the park at the afternoon celebration is another bright memory made possible compliments of nature. It’s going to be a really fun day for all ages, and every plastic bottle and bag picked up during the morning cleanup is a step forward,” said Nature Center Executive Director Leila Wetmore.
