Anona (Arata, Naphen) Broadman, 86, of Avon, a beloved sister, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Nov. 18. Born in Darien, she was the daughter of the late George F. and Florence B. Arata. Nona was educated at the Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and Hollins College, Va. She married Peter Baker Naphen, living and raising their three sons in New Canaan until his untimely death.

Betty Borgeson Lotz, a 67-year resident of Darien, died on Dec. 21, 2017 at Stamford Hospital following a short illness. She was 94 years old. She lived independently in her Darien home until her final two weeks, the fulfillment of her long held hope and wish. She was born on June 25, 1923 in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of the late Rudoph and Gerda Olson Borgeson.

Wayne Karl, the former chief of the Noroton Heights Fire Department who dedicated his life to community service and raised four sons in Darien, died on Dec. 19 surrounded by family in Vero Beach, Fl. He was 82. Mr. Karl was a man entirely without pretense, but over the course of his life he earned some lofty titles: chief, commodore, commissioner, fire marshal, justice of the peace and president. He joined the Naval Reserves shortly after graduating from Darien High School in 1953 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1960.

Elaine Ruth Berman passed away peacefully at her home in Santa Monica on Dec. 8, 2017 after a long struggle with cancer. To the end of her days she lived her life with grace and dignity, with care for others, and with love for — and of — her family. She was born Elaine Ruth Kreiner on Dec. 18, 1936, the daughter of Anthony James Kreiner and Adeline Helen Kreiner (nee Helwig), in Cleveland.

She was 69 years old. “Hyde,” or “Heidi” to her family and friends, was born in Greenwich to William P. Jenkins and Mary-Seymour Pynchon. She grew up in Rowayton and Darien with her older brother, William P. Jenkins Jr., and younger brother, Jonathan W. Jenkins.

Lindsay Lane Whitcomb, 66, passed away in the privacy of her home on Tuesday, Dec. 5, surrounded by the love of her family and by her husband, Bob, the love of her life. Born April 29, 1951 in New York City to Nancy Adams (nee Thomas) and Arthur B. Whitcomb, she spent her childhood in Darien, Winnetka, Ill., Miami, Fl. and Pawling, N.Y.

She is a graduate of Abbott Academy, Andover, Mass.; earned a bachelor’s degree at Wells College, Aurora, N.Y.; and a master of health advocacy from Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, N.Y.

She was an avid gardener, lover of art, pottery, music and travel. Most of all she loved spending time with family.

James M. Baker, husband of Katharin Harvey Baker, passed away Saturday Nov. 18 at Atria Assisted/Senior Living in Darien. Born on Dec. 12, 1921 in New York City, he was the son of James A. and Lavinia Baker. Jim attended Kings School in Stamford and the Gunnery Prep School in Washington, Conn., where he enjoyed playing tennis and hockey. During World War II, James served his country in the Navy with the rank of First Class Petty Officer, performing the duties of a sonar technician from 1942-1945.
