Three Holmes Avenue residents told police their vehicles were entered sometime from Sunday to Wednesday, Dec. 18 to 21. Police said some change and a basketball hoop were taken, and one victim reported seeing a suspect. The incidents occurred from the east end of Holmes Avenue, near its eastern intersection with West Avenue and elsewhere along the street up to an area near the intersection of Holmes Avenue and Holmes Court, about a third of a mile away. Overnight thefts from motor vehicles have been reported in the area several times in recent months (see below for previous stories).

Hamden police say that when an officer found an unoccupied, stolen Darien car parked Tuesday at Sleeping Giant State Park, a 22-year-old Stamford man and two other people later got in it. Hamden police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Marcus Colon, 22, one of the three people who got in the car (the others were a male and a female, Lovello said), was charged with stealing the vehicle and some of the stolen items in it, which police identified as having come from “numerous” burglaries in Stamford. Darien police detectives are looking into whether any of the items found in the car were stolen in Darien burglaries, Darien Police Chief Duane Lovello told the town Police Commission on Wednesday. Lovello said a male and a female who got in the car with Colon were also arrested, but Hamden police did not confirm that in their news release. ____________

Two males and a female were arrested by Hamden Police on Wednesday after they were found in a 2010 red Hyundai Sonata which was stolen from a West Avenue condominium building’s parking lot, according to Darien Police Chief Duane Lovello. “The vehicle contained what appears to be a very large amount of proceeds from other crimes, so the [Darien] Detective Bureau is working on that,” Lovello told the Darien Police Commission at its meeting Wednesday. More information is expected to be released at Monday’s police news briefing. The car had been parked in the lot unlocked and with the keys in it by the owner at 3 p.m. on Nov. 1.

Purses Taken from Two Cars in Burglaries Done in Style of Felony Lane Gang

Early Friday morning, between 7:15 and 8:10 a.m., a sport utility vehicle pulled into the Darien YMCA parking lot, and when it stopped, two men got out, smashed windows of nearby cars and took purses that were on the floor of each. The burglaries were similar to those of the Felony Lane Gang, a Florida group that law enforcement authorities have said contain 700 members who rent vehicles across much of the country, smash windows to grab purses, and hand over credit cards, debit cards and checks for accomplices to exchange for money. The group has struck vehicles in Darien and other nearby communities. When they go to banks, they tend to use drive-up windows in the lane farthest from the teller, leading police to dub them the “Felony Lane Gang.” They often commit many burglaries in the same region, often striking at parking lots of fitness clubs and parks, but no area communities reported similar thefts in the days surrounding the one in Darien, a Police Department spokesman said.

Update 12:42 p.m., Friday:
The man charged with entering a woman’s car at McGuane Park in Darien was arrested by New Canaan police soon afterward when he was found trying to get into cars at Waveny Park, according to police reports from both towns. Here’s NewCanaanite.com’s article by Michael Dinan about New Milford resident Scott Palmenta’s arrest in that town, followed by Darienite.com’s original article on Thursday:

New Canaan police on Wednesday afternoon arrested a 45-year-old New Milford man following reports that he had been trying to enter parked cars at Waveny Park. At about 4:05 p.m. on Nov. 16, officers arrived at Waveny and, following an investigation that included witness statements, charged the man with criminal attempt to third-degree burglary and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny, according to a police report. Police said they stopped short of bringing more serious charges because it did not appear that the man had physically entered any vehicles at the park, the report said.

The vehicles were parked in various places around town — Intervale Road, Revere Road, Noroton Avenue and the parking lot of Darien Ice Rink — and police know nothing to indicate that the incidents are related, although the locations on Noroton Avenue and Revere Road are not far from each other. Two vehicles, apparently both unlocked, were entered in Woodway Country Club parking lots, and credit cards taken from one of them were used before either of the victims realized the thefts had taken place, police said. Police say they’ve been examining a surveillance video recording of the parking lot from when the crimes took place late in the afternoon of Wednesday, June 29 at the club, located at 412 Hoyt St. In one case, a 2014 Jeep Limited, inadvertently left unlocked along the pond side of a parking lot, was entered when it was parked there from 2 to 4:45 p.m. Police said the thief was caught on surveillance camera at about 4:15 p.m. entering the cars. The victim, a 59-year-old New Canaan woman, said she didn’t realize anything had been taken until she received a call the next day from her bank asking her about some transactions. Police said nothing was reported stolen other than credit and debit cards.

$780 in Cash Reported Stolen from Unlocked Pickup Truck with Windows Rolled Down

A man on his way to a construction site at a home on Raiders Lane had to park his pickup truck on Red Coat Pass near Tory Hole Road because some paving work was blocking the way. And that’s the last the 40-year-old Stamford man ever saw of the $780 he left bundled with some credit cards on the front seat of the unlocked pickup truck — that he left with windows open, he told police. His credit cards were left in the pickup truck, a 1990 Ford Ranger. The incident was reported to police at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15. A 35-year-old flagman for the paving project told police he had a clear view of the parked truck and had been working at the site since about 6:45 a.m. He said he didn’t recall when the truck was parked there, and a lot of people had walked by that spot throughout the morning.
