Several Darien Motor Vehicles Entered Overnight, Teens in Stolen Car Seen, Later Arrested in Clinton

On Revere Road, a group of teenagers was seen checking whether cars were locked, at about 1:30 a.m., Saturday, police said. That night when several cars at different spots in town were entered and some items were stolen from them. A witness gave police the license plate number of the SUV the teens used when they left. Four teenagers were later arrested in Clinton early the same morning — inside the same SUV, which had been stolen in New Haven, according to police. Darien police gave this description of the various incidents that night, including accusations which haven’t been proven in court (and without charges yet filed by Darien police against anyone):

The first report of a vehicle being entered during that overnight period came from the owner of a 2018 Mitsubishi Outback, which was parked at 14 Midbrook Lane at 7:30 p.m.

By 11:30 p.m., the owner returned to the SUV to find that a backpack valued at $50 was missing, along with a U.S. passport.

SUV Stolen from Sylvan Road Among Recent Overnight Vehicles Entered

An unlocked sport utility vehicle with its keys left inside was stolen from the driveway of 19 Sylvan Road on Sunday, Nov. 25, police were told by the owner, who was visiting a friend. Darien police gave these additional details about the incident and the following other recent incidents involving thieves entering vehicles in town:

The SUV, a 2011 BMW X5, was last seen in the driveway at about 9 p.m., the victim told police. She said that by 11:45 p.m., not three hours later, she realized it was missing. Inside the SUV was a pocketbook in which she had her driver’s license, bank cards, about $1,000 in jewelry and $300 in cash.

A Year After Credit Cards Stolen, Darien Police Find, Charge and Extradite 34-Year-Old Boston Man

Almost a year after credit cards were stolen from a vehicle parked at Avalon Darien and used at the Interstate 95 Darien South rest stop, town police extradited and arrested a 34-year-old Boston man accused of the crimes. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

On Oct. 28, 2017, Darien police were told that credit cards were taken from a vehicle parked at the apartment complex at 137 Hollow Tree Ridge Road. Cards taken in the burglary were then used at the rest stop. With the help of Connecticut State Police, Darien police got surveillance video records showing the credit cards used at the rest stop.

Items Stolen from Three Unlocked Vehicles and a Mailbox, Same Night, Most in Same Area of Town

Along with the normal thefts from unlocked vehicles overnight, 10 thank-y0u cards were taken from a mailbox sometime overnight from Monday to Tuesday, Oct. 8 to 9 — all but one in the same area of town. The thefts, all reported Tuesday morning, occurred on Middlesex Road, Noroton Avenue and Edgerton Street. A locked vehicle in the same driveway as one of the thefts was untouched, police pointed out. Also: Darien police also report that during the past week Darien police responded to 10 motor vehicle accidents, of which three involved minor injuries.

One car was — briefly — missing and two other vehicles were entered in Darien on two different nights last weekend. As usual, all three vehicles apparently hadn’t been locked. Darien police provided these details on each incident:
Stolen: Libby Lane, Overnight Friday to Saturday
A 2012 Ford Fusion was stolen from the driveway of 16 Libby Lane sometime overnight, the owner discovered shortly before 8:32 a.m., Saturday, when he called police. The man said that when he parks the car at home, he typically leaves the keys hidden inside it but locks the car and uses a second key for access. He wasn’t sure if he had locked the car that night.

At 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, a resident of 8 Meadowbrook Road went out to his SUV outside the house to find that it had been rifled through. The 2016 Audi Q5 had been unlocked overnight, the same night that two unlocked vehicles were stolen several blocks to the north on Huckleberry Lane. One of those vehicles was involved in a police pursuit several nights later in Westport and Fairfield. After the driver crashed the car, he and two other teenagers were arrested.

Three Vehicles Within Three Blocks of Each Other Entered Overnight Thursday to Friday

Overnight Thursday to Friday, Aug. 2 to 3, three unlocked vehicles parked outside homes in Noroton were entered, two on Garden City Road and a third just three blocks away on Crimmins Road, police said. The owner of a green 2017 Jaguar F-Type, parked outside 16 Garden City Road, noticed that the vehicle had been entered and rummaged through and called police at 6:16 a.m., Friday. Nothing seemed to be missing. The owner thought she had locked the car when it was parked the day before, but there were no signs of forced entry.

A window was smashed and a purse containing a checkbook and credit cards was stolen from the center console of an SUV parked Sunday afternoon at the Darien YMCA, police were told. The victim told police she had parked her gray 2012 Toyota Sienna in the lot at the Y from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 5. When she returned, she found the front passenger’s side window broken out. The purse, valued at $350, was missing.

Paul Johnson about the pattern typically followed by thieves stealing from vehicles Darien drivers leave unlocked outside overnight. “We’ve had some success in making arrests,” Osborne said. “The Detective Division is working very hard on this latest rash, and we do have some viable leads on that. We’ll be following up as best we can.” “Do we have any idea whether this is a kind of planned group that is doing this, or just individuals?”

Nine Unlocked Vehicles Entered, One Stolen, on One Night Last Week

Five unlocked vehicles were entered, with items taken from some of them, on Hickory Lane and nearby Deepwood Road overnight from Monday to Tuesday, and one of them was stolen, police said. That same night, three other unlocked vehicles, along with another that appears to have been unlocked were entered at various other locations in town. Bridgeport police found the car and arrested two early the next morning. Darien police described the incidents this way:

At 7:38 a.m., Tuesday, police were told that a silver 2015 Lexus IS 350, parked unlocked and with the keys inside, had been stolen sometime beteen 8:45 p.m. Monday night, July 16. A set of golf clubs valued at $1,700 was inside the car. Police checking the area found a small case with a name on it.

At 7:06 a.m.. on Saturday, the owner of a gray 2018 Honda Pilot told police that the SUV had been stolen from his driveway at 45 Phillips Lane, a road off of Hoyt Street. The man had parked the vehicle, with a pair of Ryban sunglasses valued at $200 in it, at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14. The SUV also had two sets of its keys in it. At about 7 a.m. he saw the vehicle was missing.

Four Vehicles Stolen, Others Entered Around Post Road in Noroton Overnight, Saturday to Sunday

Four vehicles were stolen overnight, Saturday to Sunday, July 7 to 8, three of them in Noroton on or near the Post Road, and other vehicles had been found entered in the same area, police said. One of the vehicles was later driven by a teenager without a driver’s license and was chased by Greenwich police before the car smashed into and severed a utility pole, which also caused extensive damage to the car, Greenwich police said. The driver and another teenager, 16, were charged by police, who did not report that any injuries resulted. Darien police gave these accounts of what happened:

Thefts from Unlocked Cars, SUVs Across Town Entered Overnights in Mid-June

Across town, Darienites who didn’t lock their car or sport utility vehicles overnight found out between about June 14 and the early morning of June 19 that the vehicles had been entered overnight, police said. Sometimes items were taken, and on Alpine Lane, where there was a report of suspicious males early one morning, an SUV stolen from Stamford was found not far from where other vehicles had been entered. Two of the vehicles were entered on Alpine Lane or Edelweiss Lane overnight from Monday to Tuesday, June 18 to 19. That’s the same area where two vehicles were entered overnight from the previous Friday to Saturday (among 10 entered across town that night). In the previous cases, one vehicle was on Echo Drive, the other on 7 Alpine Lane — right next door to one entered at 5 Alpine Lane overnight on Monday to Tuesday.

Ten unlocked vehicles were entered by thieves overnight Friday to Saturday in two areas of town, and two vehicles were stolen in each area: One area is south of St. John’s Cemetery; the other is on streets off of West Avenue near downtown Noroton Heights. The vehicles were all parked on side streets, not main roads leading to those streets, although some of the streets intersected only with main roads. In one case, police said, a victim’s surveillance camera, which monitored an entrance to the house near the doorbell, had captured some images:

Sometime overnight Tuesday to Wednesday last week (June 5 to 6), two cars were reported to have been entered as well as a house, and a bicycle was missing from the porch of another house, Darien police said. All of the cars entered and the two other thefts were within two blocks of each other on the Post Road in Noroton, near the Darien YMCA. Here’s what police said they were told:

A woman told police she parked her vehicle in the driveway at about 11:30 p.m. She didn’t lock it (although for years the same area of town has had numerous incidents of unlocked cars being entered by thieves). The next morning, at 7:30, she went to the car and found the driver’s door ajar and the contents of the glove box strewn about. Nothing seemed to be missing.
