A 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were found by police on Dec. 31 in possession of heroin, needles and a cell phone that had just been stolen from a downtown Darien business, according to police. An employee at the Verizon store at 1075 Post Road called police at 1:05 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31 to tell them a phone had just been stolen from the store. The employee gave police a description of a young man and woman.

State troopers arrested a 26-year-old man and seized 2.6 pounds of marijuana, along with crack cocaine and heroin Tuesday morning after they became suspicious of two people in a crookedly parked car at the Darien North rest stop on Interstate 95. At 11:40 a.m., troopers from the Troop G barracks in Bridgeport saw a green Mazda 626 parked crookedly in a parking spot at the rest stop on the northbound-traffic side of the highway. Two men in the car were “behaving very nervously,” according to the police announcement. That caught the troopers’ attention, so they approached the car and started talking with the occupants, who “couldn’t provide answers to simple questions.” While they were talking, one of the troopers saw several signs that each of the men might have been taking drugs.

When police stopped a gray Honda Accord on West Avenue at about 12:30 Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, they determined the driver was intoxicated with alcohol, and his passenger, also intoxicated, had marijuana and traces of cocaine in his backpack, police said. As the 19-year-old driver traveled east on West Avenue, the police officer saw the car cross the center dividing lines on the road several times. The officer stopped the vehicle at 12:31 near the intersection of West Avenue and Edgerton Street. When speaking to the driver, the officer smelled an alcoholic beverage.

A traffic stop and the smell of marijuana led Darien police to search the Volvo of a 58-year-old man who was driving Monday afternoon, Nov. 13 on Hollow Tree Ridge Road, police said. Police also said: When the officer asked the man where the smell came from, he said he didn’t know. Asked whether there was contraband in the vehicle, he said, “Probably not.” His statement proved inaccurate, according to police.

A 24-year-old man, according to Darien police, had a slew of packages of marijuana along with some other drugs with him while driving without a front license plate, with a back license plate for a different car, with a driver’s license under suspension, and with no insurance on the car — which was without a current registration. Police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

At 5:05 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5, a gray Nissan Altima was going west on the Post Road in Darien near the southbound entrance at the Exit 13 interchange to Interstate 95 , a police officer on patrol noticed the car. Specifically, the officer noticed the lack of a front plate, checked state records for the license on the back, and then had the suspicious vehicle pull over. The record check showed that the license plate belonged to a green Saturn LS2.

When state police troopers saw that a car made an unsafe lane change and followed other cars too closely on Interstate 95 in Darien, the car was pulled over at a rest stop, where police found drugs and guns, then arrested the two occupants on charges including illegal weapons possession and possession of drugs with intent to sell, state police said. At 11:49 p.m., Sunday, troopers from Troop G in Bridgeport who were patrolling Interstate 95 in Darien saw the vehicle, a 2012 Hyundai Sonata, commit the traffic violations. The car was pulled over at a rest stop. (The state police announcement didn’t say whether the car was on the northbound- or southbound-traffic side of the highway, or which of the two Darien rest stops the arrest took place.)

Troopers spoke with the occupants of the car — Sarah Allen, 18 (and the driver), and William Page, 19. Both are Main residents (state police did not say what community in Maine they live in).

An 18-year-old Darien man arrested on Monday was selling marijuana and THC (the active ingredient of marijuana) to teenagers and adults in town, Darien police said. John “Jack” Read of Shady Acres Road had marijuana and other contraband with a police-estimated street value of $6,500 in his home when police searched it, along with unspecified “quantities of LSD,” police said. [Update:] Read is the second person from the same address, 20 Shady Acres Road, charged with selling illegal drugs. In May 2015, Kevin Grant, then 25, was charged by Darien police with possession of narcotics and two counts of selling of narcotics. A 22-year-old man wanted on a charge of failure to appear in court on a minor larceny charge was brought to the attention of police when the driver of a car he was in kept hitting a window in a parking lot downtown, according to police. When officers were called to the scene, they arrested him and found an ecstasy pill on him, police said.
