Wednesday is predicted to be the busiest traffic day of the holiday season. Metro-North: During our heaviest travel times (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), we will provide longer and extra trains on all lines. See a regular timetable for details. Darien Public Schools close early.

Train Schedule Changes Starting Christmas Eve, Through New Year’s Day

Darien commuters and others taking the train will find schedule changes around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, Metro-North says. Here’s the announcement, (with links to online schedules at the bottom):

Who needs flying reindeer? Our special Christmas/New Year’s Holiday timetable has all the service you’ll need for getting around Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. Here’s what we have “under the tree” for you:

Early Getaway Service on Christmas Eve (Thursday, Dec. 24) Our regular weekday schedule will feature more cars on trains at key travel times and 18 additional early getaway trains (5 on the Hudson Line, 3 on the Harlem Line, and 10 the New Haven Line) departing Grand Central between 12 noon and 4:10 PM.

Barrett Bookstore in Darien has something for your friends and family this Christmas, including stocking stuffers. Here’s a baker’s dozen of some recommended books from store owner Sheila Daley (for the children’s books, we also quote from the store’s winter newsletter, where you can find more about each of these books):

[Daley says the store is well-stocked with every one of these books. Barrett Bookstore is open Sunday, Dec. 20 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. and Monday through this Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Thursday, Christmas Eve, they’ll probably be closing early, around 4 p.m., she says, “unless somebody’s banging on the door.” Try to get there before that.]

Darien YMCA Collecting Used & New Mittens, Hats & Gloves for Homeless

Darien YMCA’s Y Cares Club is collecting slightly used and new mittens, hats and gloves to donate to the Bridgeport Emergency Shelter. Donations are being accepted until [Monday] Dec. 21 in the lobby under the Giving Tree. The club met over the weekend [Dec. 5 to 6] and wrote Christmas cards to servicemen and women, made garland for the animals at the Darien Nature Center, and put up the Giving Tree.

The Christmas tree for Darien Human Services clients is now up near the entrance to Town Hall and the department is looking for people who will drop off gifts for families in town. You’re invited to take a paper gingerbread man from the tree for a particular gift, or just drop off gifts at Town Hall (open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday). Here’s part of the announcement, with a list of gift ideas:

Feed A Mind – Give Children’s Books, Learning Games/Toys or a Gift Card to a Book Store
Spread the Holiday Joy – Give a Gift Card for Wal-Mart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, Target, Old Navy or Kohl’s
Buy a Holiday Meal – Give a Gift Card for Stop & Shop or Shoprite
Help a Neighbor Get To Work – Give a Gas Gift Certificate
Keep a Family Warm – Write a check to Darien Human Services Gift Fund to pay for Heating
Give a Gift of Clothing – Socks, Tights/Leggings, Hats, Gloves, Scarves, PJs, Sweat Shirts, Sweat Pants for girls & boys or Tee Shirts for both, all sizes. Make a Wish Come True – Give Trucks, Cars, Sports balls, Dolls, Board Games, Snow Sleds, Super Heroes, Arts and Crafts, Legos, Electronic Toys, Star Wars, Flash Lights, Watches, Costume Jewelry, stocking stuffers such as gift cards Dunkin Donuts, Subway, Uncle’s Deli, Planet Pizza, Gofer Ice Cream
