After a picture was posted online by a Darien High School student showing the student with a gun — which turned out to be a BB gun — Principal Ellen Dunn assured parents on Wednesday that “no direct threats were made toward the school or any DHS student.” Dunn’s email, sent at 2:07 p.m., also said, “Our school student resource officer and the Darien Police Department were involved immediately and we are confident that they are handling this matter appropriately. ”

Here’s the full text of Dunn’s email to parents:

Dear Families,

Earlier today, it came to the High School Administration’s attention that a DHS student posted an image online, last evening, holding a weapon that has now been determined to be a BB gun. No direct threats were made toward the school or any DHS student. Our school student resource officer and the Darien Police Department were involved immediately and we are confident that they are handling this matter appropriately.

When police stopped a gray Honda Accord on West Avenue at about 12:30 Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, they determined the driver was intoxicated with alcohol, and his passenger, also intoxicated, had marijuana and traces of cocaine in his backpack, police said. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

As the 19-year-old driver traveled east on West Avenue, the police officer saw the car cross the center dividing lines on the road several times. The officer stopped the vehicle at 12:31 near the intersection of West Avenue and Edgerton Street. When speaking to the driver, the officer smelled an alcoholic beverage.

When police were told at about 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9 that there appeared to be a rifle laying on the pavement of Hollow Tree Ridge Road near Ox Ridge Lane, officers arrived to see what was going on. There on the roadway was a rifle — a BB rifle, specifically a Daisy “Red Rider” BB gun. Police didn’t find any reason to think it had been involved in a crime. If it’s yours, or if you know anything about the Red Rider that seems to have lost its ride, please tell Darien police.
