Since Election Day, Nov. 8, these legislators, each representing Darien at the state or federal levels, have issued statements about the wider implications of the election to the United States. Excerpts of President-elect Donald Trump’s election night statement have been added to the bottom. Here are the statements:

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy — Nov. 9
Murphy posted this statement on his Facebook page:

Despite how it may appear to some, America is not a different place today than it was yesterday.

The election of Donald Trump to the presidency, “no matter what side of the aisle you sit on” is momentous and has left many “shocked and in fear,” say the clergy of St. Luke’s Church, which will hold a special church service at 7 p.m. tonight. “[W]e will ask God to give us the courage to re-commit ourselves to the gospel imperative of seeking justice, working for peace, and including all people in the circle of God’s compassionate embrace,” said an email from the church’s clergy. Reconciliation and civility is a strong theme of and reason for the service, the email said: “We need divine help to be able to work fiercely and passionately for what we know to be good and right and true, without blaming or shaming others on the way to that ideal.” Here’s the full text of the email:

Dear Friends,

Last night’s election has shocked the world. No matter what side of the aisle you sit on, it’s clear that something momentous has happened. There is uncertainty. We’ve never been in a place like this before. Many people are shocked and in fear. Some say the last time they felt like this was 9/11.

The Darien Republican Town Committee is hosting a “Meet Your Candidates” event on Sunday, October 9, at the Wee Burn Beach Club from 5 to 7 p.m., and tickets are $25 per person. The purpose of this event is to introduce registered voters to a dedicated team of 5 state and local Republican candidates who are committed to making our community and our state stronger. Two of our candidates are also the endorsed candidates for the Independent Party. Everyone is welcome to come. Tickets are available online now until October 3 at www.darienrtc.com/events/html.

Darien League of Women Voters is holding its Fall Kick-Off Program, “It’s an Election,” on Thursday, Sept. 22, with Colin McEnroe of WNPR speaking at a 7 p.m. dinner.
