What is the fastest growing threat to the health of Darien residents? How does the health of Darien residents compare with that of the U.S., or Connecticut?

The second of three programs, titled, “Darien – How Healthy Are We? Part 2 Substance Abuse, Impacts and Consequences,” will help answer that Thursday night at Darien Library.

Come to our upcoming presentations to learn about current health trends in town and how we compare with local communities and the State of Connecticut.

Over the span of three sessions, the Darien Health Department, along with renowned guest speakers, will present results of a year-long study of data related to health issues and trends in Darien.

The first session was held last Thursday and is expected to be up on TV79 soon. Here’s what’s on the agenda for the next meeting, at 7 p.m. (continuing until 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19:

Biggie's Chronicles image 01-10-17Before the program begins, flu shots will be available at the library from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (for $25).

Gary Morello, associate minister at the Darien Congregational Church will discuss acceptance and transformation and lead the discussion featuring the above speakers, plus Caleb Moore, MD and Robert Zembroski, DC, DACNB, MS.

Following that, Malcolm Jauval Spears, Jr., a Stamford native, graduate of Liberation Programs will deliver the keynote talk, sharing his struggle with addiction as told in his book Biggie’s Chronicles, part of his commitment to inspire people to live their dreams.

The winner of Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Slogan Contest will be announced as well.

Others on the panel:

  • Raul Pino, MD, MPH, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health
  • David Knauf, Director of Health – “What is an Epidemic?”
  • Duane Lovello, Darien Chief of Police – Police activity and local impact
  • Joseph Russo, MD, Maud Purcell of  “Saved From Addiction, Inc.” will talk about innovative treatment options.
  • Alan Mathis, President & CEO, Liberation Programs, Inc.
