When Norwalk police notified police in Darien that a stolen SUV being tracked with a GPS device was in town, police went to Goodwives Shopping Center, where they found the vehicle and its driver, Darien police said.

Police gave this account (including accusations not proven in court):

The driver, a 33-year-old Norwalk man, told police he was dizzy, and police saw that he had difficulty breathing. He admitted to using drugs earlier in the day. He was taken to a hospital, and when that happens, police typically don’t immediately make an arrest. That’s what happened in this case, and Darien police expect to apply for an arrest warrant charging him with third-degree larceny.

The car, a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban sport utility vehicle valued at $3,000, had been reported stolen on Wednesday, Sept. 7, by an employee of the Lillian August retail company in Norwalk. A company key box had previously been broken into, and company officials thought that was how the vehicle was taken.

At 12:33 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, Norwalk police notified the Darien Police Department that the vehicle was in Darien, and police here followed the tracking information to find it.

The driver told police the vehicle belonged to his boss, who allowed him to drive it, but company employees said that wasn’t the case. The man may have worked for Lillian August in the past or was possibly a temporary employee at the company, police were told.

A History of Arrests and Convictions

The driver has been arrested previously on 28 different charges, Darien police said.

Even with repeated convictions, the man has been released from jail or prison only to be arrested within months, according to the Connecticut Judicial Branch website.

He was given a suspended sentence just two weeks ago by a judge in Bridgeport after a conviction on evading responsibility after a property damage car accident, according to the website.

Some Convictions

The same website shows that the man has these convictions:

  • third-degree larceny in January 2010 (arrested in June 2010 by Milford police) — with an April 2011 sentence of a year in jail
  • third-degree burgalary, first-degree criminal mischief and violation of probation stemming from a January 2010 incident (arrested by Plainfield police) — with a March 2011 sentence of four years in jail, suspended after two years, and five years of probation

  • evading responsibility after a property-damage accident in April (arrested by Bridgeport police) — with an Aug. 29 sentence of a year in jail, execution suspended immediately, and two years of probation
