Sister Mary William Handley of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, entered Eternal Life on Saturday, April 22 at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse Health Care Center in Baltic.

Sister Mary Handley, 83, passed away on April 22. Her funeral will be on Friday, April 28.

She was born Patricia Handley in Norwalk Sept. 10, 1933 the daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Raymond) Handley. Sister was baptized in the Methodist Church before converting to Catholicism in 1952.

After attending schools in Darien, she entered the Sisters of Charity in Baltic in 1963 and professed Perpetual Vows in 1972.

Sister earned her masters degree in education from Eastern Connecticut State University and taught in various schools in Connecticut from 1966-1995, including the former St. John School for Boys in Deep River.

She also ministered to the elderly in Watertown, Wis. After retiring due to failing health, Sister faithfully and generously served her community as resident artist.

She is survived by her cousin and dear friend Marion Perry of Avon, and Marion’s children as well as several distant cousins.

A Funeral Mass will be held at the Holy Family Motherhouse Chapel on Friday at 4 p.m. Burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery Baltic.

Visitation at the Holy Family Motherhouse is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 27 and Friday, April 28 from 12 noon until the time of the funeral.
