Stephen F. Zangrillo, 91, who founded the Darien Sport Shop, died Wednesday, July 8, the Darien Times reported. He was born Dec. 26, 1923.
Zangrillo opened the store in 1946, just down the street from its current location. The original store had one room and just 400 square feet of space, said his daughter, Gina Zangrillo (now president of the store) in a video on the store’s website.
He is survived by his wife Yolanda Zangrillo, his brother Robert Zangrillo; and four children: Stephen F. Zangrillo Jr., Anthony Zangrillo, Stephanie Zangrillo, and Gina Zangrillo.
Survivors also include his six grandchildren: Stephen F. Zangrillo III, Nicholas and Samantha Neville, and Gregory, Douglas and Allison Reilly.
There are no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be held at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Post Road in Darien at 11 a.m., Monday, July 13.
