Work on replacing the Old Kings Highway North bridge over Interstate 95 will mean various delays in upcoming weeks and months and, for drivers headed toward the Post Road, there will be a detour away from the bridge starting late in April and continuing through most of the time it takes to replace the bridge.

That looks like the biggest  inconvenience for drivers during the project, of the several mentioned in a news release early Friday afternoon from Darien Police Department. The Police Commission is the official Local Traffic Authority for the town, and the announcement from the Police Department was issued in its name.

Through mid-April, delays can be expected as the bridge is reduced to one lane of alternating traffic. Vehicles headed over the bridge away from the Post Road will continue to be able to use the highway entrance for Interstate 95 North, even when traffic headed toward the Post Road is diverted onto I-95 (vehicles can then get off at Exit 13 and take a left at the Post Road to complete the detour).

On eight nights at some points during the project (and those nights can be together or split up at different dates), the bridge will be completely impassable from either direction, according to the announcement (published in full below). That will allow replacement elements to be installed.

The bridge is one of three in and near Darien that the Connecticut Department of Transportation expects to replace this year. The other two are the Post Road bridge over the Noroton River and, just to the west, the East Main Street (Route 1) bridge over Interstate 95 at Exit 9.

Here’s the news release:

Advisory Issued: March 31, 2017

Project Type: Complete Replacement of the Old Kings Highway North Bridge over I-95

Area Affected: Old Kings Highway North including the overpass over I-95

Duration of Project: April 1, 2017-Nov. 26, 2017

The Darien Legal Traffic Authority is advising motorists of a long term project to replace the existing bridge on Old Kings Highway North over I-95. The project will be commencing on April 1, 2017.

 By mid-April, local motorists may experience sporadic delays in the area as an alternating, one lane traffic pattern over the bridge may be in use during the daytime hours as the project gets underway.

 By the end of April 2017, a long term detour will be in place as follows: All W/B Old Kings Highway North traffic (traffic coming up towards US-1) will be detoured onto I-95 northbound. Motorists seeking to access US-1 (Boston Post Road) will quickly exit I-95 via exit 13 onto US- 1. This detour for W/B Old Kings Highway North traffic will be a 24-hour a day, 7-day a week detour for the majority of this project. Local motorists are advised to consider alternate routes.

 E/B Old Kings Highway traffic (traffic coming from US-1) will be allowed to travel through the area and access I-95 northbound and all points east on Old Kings Highway North for the duration of the project, except on those overnights where a complete closure of Old Kings Highway North is required (as detailed below).

 The Connecticut DOT requires up to eight (8) overnights where the Old Kings Highway North bridge and the surrounding area will be completely closed to all traffic. This is required to set portions of the steel superstructure of the bridge into place. Appropriate detour signage for all vehicles (cars and trucks) will be prominently posted to assist motorists in the area. The eight overnights will not be consecutive and further traffic updates will be issued by the Darien Police Department as the specific dates are identified.

 Further questions on the local impact of this project can be directed to Captain Don Anderson of the Darien Police Department by phone at (203) 662-5312 or via email at danderson@darienct.gov.
