A fire turned a black Mercedes Benz GI450 into a blackened wreck on Goodwives River Road after a driver noticed smoke coming from under the passenger seat and pulled the car to the side of the road.

At 7:36 p.m., police and firefighters were called to the scene, where they found the 2007 car fully engulfed in flames, which were put out without any injuries. The driver was also uninjured.

The driver told authorities that he not only noticed the smoke, but quickly got a message on the vehicles display screen telling him to seek service immediately. But apparently it was already too late.

The smoke soon got heavier and the driver — who was also uninjured — stopped the car. It didn’t take long for it to go up in flames.

The Darien Fire Marshal’s Office opened an investigation to see what went wrong. Initially, there was no evidence to suggest anything other than a vehicle malfunction or accidental cause, police said.
