Brian O’Malley, a West Point graduate who was awarded a Bronze Star for his service with the U.S. Army in Iraq, then served as a reservist in Afghanistan, has been selected as the 2016 Darien Memorial Day speaker.

Brian O’Malley, Darien’s 2016 Memorial Day speaker

O’Malley, the junior vice commander of Darien’s VFW Post 6933 and an officer in the Connecticut VFW, will speak during services held at Spring Grove Veterans Cemetery immediately following the Memorial Day Parade, at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30, 2016.

State and local officials, Darien selectmen and Darien Police and fire department chiefs are all invited to this patriotic commemoration. The Darien Monuments and Ceremonies Commission encourages the public to attend.

Brian graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1999 with a BS degree in German/French and Nuclear Engineering.

Following graduation, he was commissioned as an Army officer in the Infantry and deployed to Iraq from 2004-2005, where he served with the First Brigade Combat Team, First Cavalry Division in Sadr City, Baghdad.

For his service there, Brian was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. Brian was again called up as a member of the Individual Ready Reserve to deploy to Afghanistan from 2006-2008, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service.

Brian then attended New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business where he earned an MBA in Finance and investment banking. He is currently employed by IBM as a consolidation manager for Global Technology Service. Brian previously served in the Mergers and Acquisition Department at IBM.

O’Malley remains active in veterans’ affairs and in addition to his office in the Darien VFW, is also an officer in the Connecticut VFW. He works with America Corporate Partners, which specializes in helping veterans make the transition to the civilian workforce through mentorships, networking, resume support and job search help. Brian is a member of the Team Red, White and Blue and for Team Rubicon.

Brian, his wife and daughter live in Stamford.
