Jason Gay, author of Little Victories: Perfect Rules for Imperfect Living, will be the Library’s featured speaker Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

In Little Victories Gay brings that trademark wit to an irreverent anti-advice book. It’s not a guide for how to lean in, tidy up, master your money, change your diet or be 10% happier.

Little Victories book coverInstead, Little Victories is a short and brilliantly funny book about the less glamorous things (like surviving Thanksgiving with your in-laws, life with small children, dealing with aging parents, navigating the workplace), the little victories, as it were, that make up our everyday lives. It’s Gay’s particular brand of advice he calls “both practical and ridiculous… neither perfect nor universal.”

Gay offers his thoughts on a range of topics, including: stress solutions (“There is no downside to throwing a 2-pound bag of flour against a wall – it feels totally fantastic”), marriage (“Brunch is actually the third leading cause of divorce in the country”), how to create a great wedding reception playlist (“Yes, you’re playing ‘Brick House’”), travel (“Do not rent the PT Cruiser”), and food (“I subsist mostly on scraps left behind by a toddler”).

“Jason Gay’s rules for living will make you laugh out loud, and also make a whole lot of sense. This is an advice book that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is all the more valuable for it.”

— Charles Duhigg, bestselling author of The Power of Habit

“I loved this book. Jason Gay’s Little Victories is funny, wise, direct, deceptively straight-forward and incredibly moving. As soon as I was finished reading it, I put it in the mail to my father, along with a reminder of my love. Such reminders, after all, are what we are here for, as this story—well—reminds us.”

—Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love
