Jeanne S. Artis, 90, a resident of Darien since 1964, passed away on Saturday, May 21 at Stamford Hospital after a short illness. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard W. Artist.

Jeanne Artis’ wake will be on Tuesday at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home.

Born in Bethlehem, Pa., Mrs. Artis was the daughter of Charles and Florence Haney Serman. As a young girl, she was an expert swimmer and an accomplished musician, playing clarinet in her high school band and performing solo and duo piano in regional recitals and concerts.

Mrs. Artis attended Syracuse University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She later took courses at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta and received a bachelors degree in sociology from Moravian College in Bethlehem, where she met her husband, Richard. They were married in 1949.

Active in church work, Mrs. Artis was a volunteer in the music department and later served as a circle chairman at Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien.

After raising four children in Atlanta and Darien, Mrs. Artis returned to college, taking courses in accounting and computer sciences. She subsequently served in various marketing positions at James River Corporation in Norwalk.

In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by four daughters: Susan Matthews of Germantown, Tenn.; Jeanne Meder of Fairfield; Allison Gallagher of Darien; and Marilyn Jones also of Fairfield. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 24, at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien. Burial will be private.
