George Brady “Sandy”” Gordon died Thursday, April 28 at home.

Sandy was born May 12, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo. He grew up in Darien, doing what he loved most, sailing the Atlantic waters in the family sailboat “Genie.”

George Brady Gordon’s funeral will be held Saturday.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Saint Lawrence University in 1963 and his law degree in 1974 from The University of Alabama School of Law.

He was a retired captain of the United States Army and a veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with “V” for Valor for his service.

Upon graduating from law school, Sandy practiced law in the Tuscaloosa community. He was a member of the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association and the Alabama State Bar.

In 1982, he joined the University of Alabama Office of Counsel. He was named university counsel in 2000, and in 2013 he was honored as the recipient of the E. Roger Sayers Distinguished Service Award, being recognized for his diligent work ethic and tireless commitment to the mission of the University.

Sandy loved the water and enjoyed the company of others who shared his passion. He was a member, officer and instructor with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary-Flotilla 85 and the Tuscaloosa Sailing Club.

He also was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Saint Andrews Society of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa Jaycees and the Tuscaloosa Preservation Society.

Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean Fargason Gordon; his beloved golden retriever companion, Boone; brother, Douglas Gordon (Charlotte Anthony) of Corvallis, Ore.; nephews: Dylan Gordon of New York City and Dashell Gordon of Corvallis, Ore.

He also is survived by a brother-in-law, Crayton Fargason (Jan) of Northport, Ala.; niece, Christy Fargason Baynes (Allen), great-niece, Mary Carleton Baynes; great-nephew, Mason Baynes of Birmingham, Ala.; and nephew, Adam Fargason (Linh Da), Vung Tau of Vietnam; and brother-in-law, John Fargason (Diane); and nephew, Johnny Fargason (Krissie) of Birmingham, Ala.

He was predeceased by his parents, George Heaton and Jean Brady Gordon.

The family would like to express its appreciation to Dr. David Hinton, nurses and staff of the Manderson Cancer Center and Hospice of West Alabama for their care and concern through our journey.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 7, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with The Reverend Catherine Collier and The Reverend Hoyt Winslett officiating. Visitation and reception will follow in the service in Randall Hall. Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 605 Lurleen Wallace Boulevard N. Tuscaloosa, AL, Hospice of West Alabama or the charity of one’s choice.
