For years, novice and experienced local gardeners have looked forward to the YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s gardening classes taught each spring by Darien- based landscaper, Sara McCool of Ungemack McCool Perennial Garden.

The courses offer exceptional value to green thumbs — expert advice at unbeatable prices. All classes are held at the YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s office at 49 Old Kings Hwy. North, Darien.

Landscape Design and Practice

We offer morning and evening options to make it easier for more people to take advantage of the hands-on advice. Over the course of five sessions, Sara focuses on property designs with an eye on needs and budget. She discusses how shrubs, ground covers, trees and the use of tested planting techniques can beautify your grounds.

As a bonus, Ms. McCool visits each participants home to review current landscaping and offer advice on the latest in design.

Landscape Design and Practice will be offered at two times: Starts Monday, April 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. or starts Thursday April 19th from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Pruning/ Continuous Color

A second class, Outdoor Green Garden offers discussion and demonstration on the proper care of your property’s plantings. Common diseases and pest that can threaten your garden are reviewed, and countermeasures suggested.

McCool also discusses and demonstrates the “Art of Pruning.” Appropriate outerwear is recommended. Outdoor Green Garden will be offered one time only on Saturday, April 21 from 8 to 9:30 a.m..

Perennial Garden

With Sara’s guidance, you can learn how to keep your garden blooming from February to November by using perennials and bulbs. Sara also shares care tips to help you maintain the health of your plants. Perennial Garden is offered on Friday, May 18 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Growing Vivacious Garden

You’ll work with hands on with Sara to learn how to prepare your vegetable garden now, so it will thrive come spring. Sara will discuss choosing the proper vegetables, placement, weed control, appropriate watering & drainage, pest management, and composting. Class offered on Wednesday, April 18 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
