The gleaming yet insular Ivy League provides writer Caroline Kitchener and her peers with an extensive support system, but upon graduation that community disappears.

They endure struggles with their relationships, self-esteem, and families.

By interweaving her story with her peers from different socioeconomic and racial backgrounds, she illuminates that the common issues graduates endure are as universal as they are personal. These women try — with painstaking effort — to recreate feelings of hope and belonging, so their futures greet them with promise.

Caroline Kitchener graduated from Princeton in 2014 with a degree in history and gender studies. Her work has appeared on The Atlantic and The Guardian. She currently lives in Washington, D.C. with her partner.
